Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya (RGPV), also known as Rajiv Gandhi Technological University, is a technological university situated in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, India. Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya offers undergraduate, postgraduate and integrated postgraduate fulltime and online courses. They specialize in fields like Forensic Science, Engineering, Nanotechnology, Communication and Pharmacy. It is the 29th largest university in the world in terms of, the number of students enrolled in the university, having some 260,000 students.

History

RGPV was established in the year 1998, by Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha Act 13, 1998.[1] The university was established as a common university for all the technical institutes, mainly including engineering and pharmacy colleges in the state of Madhya Pradesh. The university was named after the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. All the colleges of Engineering, Pharmacy, Science and Technology as well as the Polytechnics affiliated to various universities and Boards of Technical Education are affiliated to the newly set up University of Technology.

Mascot

A falcon, the mascot of RGPV, holds a degree in its beak, portraying the engineers graduating from RGPV. The falcon holds a pen in one of its claws, symbolises the power of expression. The paddy grasped by the other claw represents the productivity and prosperity resulting from the efforts of the graduates in their profession.

Administration

The institute is led by the vice-chancellor, Sunil Kumar Gupta, which is assisted by the registrar, two controllers, for exams and finance, and two deputy registrars for administration and academics. There are five deans, which have authority over the academic departments of civil engineering, computer & information technology, electrical & electronics, industrial & technology and applied mathematics. The polytechnic wing is administrated by a secretary and a research officer.[2]

Campus

The institution is near Gandhi Nagar on the outskirts of the city, 3 km from the airport on the Gwalior bypass road. The campus is spread over 247 acres (1.00 km2). The main buildings start 1 km from the main gate. The campus has instruction blocks, workshop, library block, nanotechnology block, School of Energy and Environment block and Administrative block. The campus has residential facilities for the staff and separate hostels for boys and girls. The campus is full of greenery and sightseeing locations specially in rainy season. Besides the above-mentioned blocks, the campus includes an Energy Park, Bio-diesel Plant, Medicinal Garden and a number of windmills and solar panels which contribute to the energy sources of the university.

Academics

All course work and examinations for all majors and subjects are conducted with English language as the mode of instruction. Undergraduate courses are given in all engineering fields. Postgraduate courses include Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Technology (M.Tech) in relevant fields, as well as other Master degrees.Integrated postgraduate course is offered in the six disciplines of engineering with the intake of 20 each

Admissions

RGPV offers 3-year diploma programmes 10th and 12th pass candidate. admission requires taking the state level pre polytechnic test exam (PPT). Admission to the various 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (BE) programmes and to Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) is through JEE Main and 12th standard marks merit. Admission to the 5-year dual degree programmes (which award BE either M.Tech or MBA) is through JEE Main as well, but requires separate counseling. Admission to other M.Tech degrees is through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Admission to M.Pharm is through Graduate Pharmacy Aptitude Test (GPAT).

Under its umbrella there are numbers of institutions actively participating in providing the infrastructure and imparting Graduate level instructions running around 17 under graduate level courses to the students admitting to Post Graduate, Under Graduate and Diploma courses in Madhya Pradesh.[3]
