Purple is an American comfort technology company based in Alpine, Utah, USA. It specializes in the direct-to-consumer sale of mattresses, seat cushions, back cushions, pillows and platform bases.

History

In 1989, the Pearce brothers, Tony and Terry, created a partnership to create high-tech carbon fiber sporting goods and wheelchairs.

The brothers went on to create EdiZone, LLC and own 23 trademarks in cushioning materials, fluids, and hyper-elastic polymers used in medical devices, shoes, and toys.[1]

In 2013, a patent-pending machine called Mattress Max(™) was invented in order to create and mold large pieces of Hyper-Elastic Polymer(™) into a king-sized mattress, something that had never been done before. This machine effectively cut production rates and costs low enough to allow the mattress to be marketed to customers on a wide-scale and for a reasonable price.

Tony and Terry Pearce founded Purple and started a Kickstarter campaign for a king-sized mattress topper launched on September 23, 2015. A mere five days later the campaign reached its original goal amount of $25,000. On November 7, 2015 the Purple mattress campaign ended with 320 backers pledging $171,560, more than 500% of the original goal amount.

Due to high demand and packaging problems, the promised bed and topper shipments to Purple’s kickstarter backers were delayed.

Purple partnered with The Harmon Brothers team (viral video marketers) to launch a series of videos that explain and demonstrate the science behind the mattress. In less than nine months, Purple’s videos (including the raw egg test) collected almost 18 million views on YouTube and 186 million views on Facebook.[2][3]

Products

In addition to mattresses, Purple manufactures and sells seat cushions, back cushions, and pillows. They have developed specialty sheets, mattress protectors, and foundations.[4]

On September 22, 2016, a second Kickstarter campaign opened to gain $25,000 worth of financial support for Purple’s pillow. One month later, Purple raised about 2.6 million dollars from over 17,000 backers.[5]
