Prunus apetala[2][3][4] (syn. P. tschonoskii[2] and Cerasus apetala)[1] is a species in the genus Prunus in the family Rosaceae. It is also known by the name clove cherry[3] and is native to Japan.[2][3]
Description
Shrub or small tree.[2]
- Height: To 5.5m (18ft).[2]
- Leaves: Obovate leaves reach 5-10cm (2-4in) in length. Leaf tips are slender; leaf margins double-toothed. Petioles (leaf stalks) and upper leaf surfaces are hairy.[2]
- Inflorescences: Flowers in May.[2]
- Fruit: Black in color, roundish-oval in shape.[2]
- Peduncle: Peduncle (fruit stalk) ranges in length from 2.5-3.8cm (1-1.5in).[2]
Etymology
Prunus is the ancient Latin name for plum trees. Apetala is derived from Greek, meaning 'without petals'.[5]
