Pompeu Fabra University (Catalan: Universitat Pompeu Fabra, pronounced [uniβərsiˈtat pumˈpɛw ˈfaβɾə]; UPF) is a public university in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Founded in 1990, the university is named for the linguist Pompeu Fabra, an expert on the Catalan language, credited with standardising this once-disused language and revising it, giving it the status it holds today.

Academically, it is the Spanish university along with the Autonomous University of Barcelona among the top 200 best in the world according to Times Higher Education academic classification of universities (175th and 163rd place respectively) and it is one of the 7 fastest-rising young universities in the world, according to the same ranking.

In recent years, the university has begun to figure prominently in some international rankings. Its studies on the Economics field have been ranked among the top 50 worldwide, 23rd for Economics and Econometrics in the QS World University Rankings by Subject and 48th for Business & Economics in the Times Higher Education Rankings.

The university's Faculty of Economic and Business Sciences is the first and only faculty in Spain (public or private and for any discipline) to be awarded the Certificate for Quality in Internationalization granted by a consortium of 14 European accreditation agencies.

In 2010, the university was awarded as Campus of International Excellence.

Organization

UPF offers its studies around three areas of knowledge: the social sciences and humanities, the health and life sciences, and the ICT and communication sciences.

Teaching is organized in seven colleges: Humanities, Health and Life Sciences, Economics, Political and Social Sciences, Communication, Law, Translation and Interpretation as well as one polytechnic school focused on engineering and ICT.

Research is organized in eight departments: Economics and Business, Law, Political and Social Sciences, Humanities, Experimental Sciences and Health, ICT, Communication and Translation & Language Sciences.

The University also has five affiliated centers (UPF Barcelona School of Management, International Trade Business School -ESCI-, Elisava School of Design, Tecnocampus and Mar University School of Nursing -ESIM) and partnerships in different inter-university postgraduate platforms such as the Institut Barcelona d'Estudis Internacionals -IBEI- or the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics -Barcelona GSE-).

The UPF Research Park, which develops its activity at Ciutadella and Poblenou campuses, coordinates its activities in the fields of health and life sciences with the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), located at Mar campus.

UPF has also been participating in a set of institutions and centers specializing in teaching, research and transfer that have their own legal personality and which comprise the UPF Group, and which often exist in collaboration with other institutions and universities. Thus, in the field of research and transfer, plus the three science parks include the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM) - Hospital del Mar, Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE) (CSIC-UPF), the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) or the Research Centre for International Economics (CREI).
