Play of the Month is a BBC television anthology series, which ran from 1965 to 1983 featuring productions of classic and contemporary stage plays (or adaptations) which were usually broadcast on BBC1. Each production featured a different work, often using prominent British stage actors in the leading roles. The series was transmitted from October 1965 to September 1983; the producer most associated with the Play of the Month series was Cedric Messina.
Some of the 120 episodes are missing from the archives, having been junked in the 1960s and 1970s. Unless stated otherwise, the indication that the play is "lost" is taken from the lostshows.com website page as of 25 July 2017.[1] In some cases, the link is to the Play of the Month in question rather than the source text. This is indicated with an asterisk (*).

- ↑ This is almost certainly a repeat of a Theatre 625 production which had been transmitted on 27 March 1966 on BBC 2. The cast and crew appear to be identical, but the BFI Film & TV database treats them as being entirely separate productions.

- ↑ IMDb lists this production as being a fully blown Play of the Month. It is a repeat of a Stage 2 presentation, produced by Cedric Messina, which had first been transmitted by BBC2 on 7 July 1971. See the entry on the BFI Film & TV database.
- ↑ On this occasion, Play of the Month was broadcast on a Friday. The BFI has 15 September while IMDb indicates it went out on Monday 25 September. Conclusive proof that the BFI source is correct comes from a preview item in "Arts' choice", The Spectator, 8 September 1972, p.23 To confuse matters further, IMDb list a production of Shaw's Mrs Warren's Profession being transmitted on 3 October 1972 as a Play of the Month. This is an error. The production of the play, which is about prostitution, was part of the Sage 2 series, and was given a latter evening screening on BBC 2. See the entry in the BFI database.
