Parlio
Parlio was an online community committed to giving people the power to share their thoughts about issues that matter to them and communicate with some of today’s most prominent intellectuals and public figures. The social network was founded by former Google employee and democracy activist Wael Ghonim and technologists Karim Fateem and Osman who have expertise in social networks and news media.
History
Parlio was built with the intention of its members maintaining civil, thoughtful and open minded attitudes in meaningful conversations about what matters.
The official "Etiquette" statement on Parlio reads: "Be curious, open-minded, and civil. We want you to share opinions and experiences that strengthen the community’s collective intelligence. We believe diversity of thought is a virtue, and we’re here to learn new perspectives; not to win arguments. We are trying to define a new type of network. One void of Internet-trolling, where we can create a community of trust and respect that expands our horizons. Parlio values dissent, but above all else, civility."[1]
The network launched in late 2014 in private alpha. In July, 2015, Parlio posts were made accessible to the public and reader accounts were launched.[2]
In March 2016, Quora acquired Parlio.[3] It was announced to users that "Parlio conversations will continue to live on the Internet. However, it will not be possible to compose a new post on Parlio.com."
