The Somali lion (Panthera leo leo) was described on the basis of a lion specimen from Somalia under the trinomen Felis leo somaliensis by Noack in 1891.[3][4] In 1939, it was considered synonymous with F. l. leo.[5][6] Some authors considered it also synonymous with P. l. webbiensis, which was proposed for a lion specimen from Somaliland.[2][7]

In 2005, it was subordinated to P. l. leo.[1] In 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force of the Cat Specialist Group classified the lion populations in Asia and Western, Central and North Africa as P. l. leo.[8]
