Pangako Sa 'Yo (Lit: This I Promise You / English: The Promise) is a 2015 Philippine romantic melodrama television series based on the 2000 Filipino soap opera of the same title. Directed by Rory Quintos, Dado Lumibao and Olivia Lamasan, it is topbilled by Kathryn Bernardo, Daniel Padilla,[1] Jodi Sta. Maria, Angelica Panganiban, and Ian Veneracion.[2][3][4][5][6][7] The series was aired on ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida evening block and worldwide on The Filipino Channel from May 25, 2015 to February 12, 2016, replacing Forevermore.[8]

Plot

Angelo Buenavista (Daniel Padilla), the rebellious son of a powerful politician, falls in love with Yna Macaspac (Kathryn Bernardo), a simple but beautiful adopted daughter of a retired policeman. Unknown to them, their love story is destined to repeat history.

Twenty years ago, Angelo’s father, Eduardo Buenavista (Ian Veneracion), also fell in love with an innocent but headstrong barrio lass named Amor de Jesus (Jodi Sta. Maria), a relationship doomed from the start.

Doña Benita Buenavista (Pilar Pilapil), Eduardo’s mother, despised Amor, as she impeded her plans of marrying off her son to Claudia Zalameda (Angelica Panganiban), the illegitimate daughter of the illustrious Governor Zalameda. The arranged marriage will save their family business, and she must do everything to ensure this outcome.

Thus, despite their struggle to fight for their love, Eduardo and Amor eventually succumb to the pressures and machinations of Doña Benita. Eduardo is made to believe that Amor betrayed him.

The strict schedule followed during Duterte's proclamation rally factors in the time slot of hit teleserye, 'Pangako Sa 'Yo'. An insider in the Duterte campaign team says the real worry was that the audience of Tondo residents would disperse if the duration of the proclamation rally got dangerously close to the time slot of the soap.[13] "Pangako Sa ‘Yo" tops Google’s most searched TV shows in 2015.[14] Amor and Claudia have become a collection line under a high-end fashion brand.[15]

Critical reception

Katrina Stuat Santiago of The Manila Times praised the writers and added, "Suffice it to say that one cannot wait for what else will happen in this Pangako Sa ‘Yo, and that says a lot for someone who actually followed the original version in 2000."[16]
