Pristin (Hangul: 프리스틴; stylized as PRISTIN; formerly known as Pledis Girlz) is a South Korean girl group formed by Pledis Entertainment in 2016.

Several members of the group appeared on the television show Produce 101 and, as the prize for becoming two of the top contestants, members Nayoung and Kyulkyung went on to debut as part of the project girl group I.O.I. The group is composed of ten members: Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Kyulkyung, Yehana, Sungyeon, Xiyeon and Kyla.

The group debuted on March 21, 2017 with their first EP Hi! Pristin.

History

Pre-debut

In 2010, Xiyeon appeared in After School's "Bang!" music video, Orange Caramel's "Aing", as well as starring in several CFs and dramas as a child actress.

In 2013, some of the members performed alongside their labelmates Seventeen during their Like Seventeen concerts.[1] Nayoung also made appearances in a number of music videos, including Kye Bum-zu's "Game Over",[2] TROY's "Why Are We"[3] and Hanhae's "Man of the Year".[4] All of PRISTIN appeared as backup dancers in Orange Caramel's music video for their 2014 single "My Copycat".[5]

In 2015, Eunwoo, Rena and Kyulkyung appeared in the Seventeen's music video for "Mansae".[6] Prior to joining Pledis Entertainment, Eunwoo had been a contestant on the television shows Superstar K4 and The Voice Kids. Rena also participated in the fourth season of Show Me the Money, but was eliminated during the second round, "1 Minute Rap".

Nayoung, Roa, Yuha, Eunwoo, Rena, Kyulkyung and Xiyeon competed in the Mnet survival television program Produce 101, which aired from January 22 to April 1, 2016.[7] While five of the members were eliminated, Nayoung and Kyulkyung became part of the final lineup for the project girl group I.O.I, which made its debut on May 4 with the single "Dream Girls".[8]

Yehana served as a backup dancer during Seventeen's concert in February 2016.

Pledis Girlz

Pledis Entertainment announced their pre-debut team, Pledis Girlz, on March 23, 2016. Eunwoo was featured on a single by Seventeen's Vernon titled "Sickness", part of the soundtrack for the webtoon Love Revolution on March 23.[9] They held concerts from May 14–September 10, 2016 in which the members performed weekly, with the exception of Nayoung and Kyulkyung who were promoting with I.O.I.[10][11]

They released the digital single "We" on June 27, 2016, which was composed by Eunwoo and Sungyeon and written by Roa, Eunwoo, Sungyeon and Xiyeon.[12]

In July 2016, Sungyeon became a contestant on JTBC's singing competition Girl Spirit.[13][14]

They held their last concert as Pledis Girlz, "BYE & HI", on January 6, 2017 and announced their official group name to be PRISTIN, a portmanteau of "prismatic (bright and clear)" and "elastin (flawless strength)".[15][16]

2017: Official debut

On March 2, Pledis Entertainment released a teaser through the group's social medias and confirmed their debut on March 21.[17]

On March 21, Pristin officially debuted and released their first EP Hi! Pristin with their title song "Wee Woo".[18] On May 19, the group released a remix of Black Widow to conclude Hi! Pristin's promotions.[19][20]

On August 5, Pledis Entertainment confirmed Pristin's comeback on August 23, with their second EP.[21]
