PAHO Foundation

PAHO Foundation is a 501(c) (3) philanthropic organization devoted to combating disease, lengthening life, improving health care, fostering research, and training health care workers.[1] It was established September 5, 1968 under the name of Pan American Health and Education Foundation (PAHEF) and is based in Atlanta, GA. [2] [3]

PAHO Foundation supports the mobilization of resources for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO) for the Americas.[4] It has been particularly active in support of programs to control and prevent malaria and dengue. [5]

Every year since 1975, PAHO Foundation and PAHO jointly announce their annual Awards for Excellence in Inter-American Public Health Program, which recognize innovative individuals, programs, institutions, and organizations advancing health in the Americas, especially in Latin America and the Caribbean. [6]

The best known of these awards is the Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Leadership in Inter-American Public Health, created in honor of Dr. Abraham Horwitz, former director of PAHO and former president of PAHO Foundation. [7]
