Otoyol 33 was the former designation for the 58 km (36 mi) long Bursa Beltway, which has now become parts of the O-5 and O-22. The O-33 was built as a bypass around the city of Bursa in order to relieve traffic on the D.200, which traveled through the city. From the beginning the O-33 was planned to be a part of a larger motorway that would connect Istanbul to Izmir. In 2013, construction of this motorway was started and it was designated as the O-5. The western 21.7 km (13.5 mi) portion of the O-33 was later integrated into the O-5 while the eastern 36.3 km (22.6 mi) portion of the otoyol was re-designated as the O-22 and is planned to be extended 231 km (144 mi) southeast to Sivrihisar by 2023.
