The station is 28.7 miles (46.2 km) away from Union Station, the northern terminus of the line.[3] In Metra's zone-based fare system, 179th Street is in zone F. The station was the southern terminus of the line from 1984 to 2006 when it was extended to New Lenox and Manhattan. Although 179th Street is no longer the terminus of the SouthWest Service, most trains end their trips at this station. During peak hours trains continue to New Lenox and Manhattan.
