Reception

Only Human received mixed to positive reviews from critics and music listeners, noting a strong focus on a majority of the songs' lyrics though the songwriting seemed crammed together. Others mentioned that Bourne's vocals were strong but were restraint on some tracks, not showing his full vocal range found in his live performances.

After the release of I Wrote These Songs with Heavy Vibes and a Piano, Bourne admitted that Only Human was not an accurate portrayal of what he wanted to release, but was focusing on making an album similar to what was charting in the mainstream media at the time and surrendered his creative control to the number of people that were involved in the production process.
