Ockert Petrus van Zyl (born 6 May 1991) is a South African rugby union player, who last played with the Boland Cavaliers.[1] His regular position is lock or flanker.

Rugby career

After representing the Free State and Griquas at youth level, he made his first class debut in the 2015 Currie Cup First Division for the Griffons, coming on as a replacement in their 31–16 victory over the Border Bulldogs.[2] He made his first start a week later against the Leopards,[3] eventually playing in five matches for the side from Welkom.

He moved to the Wellington-based Boland Cavaliers for the 2016 season. He made twelve appearances during the 2016 Currie Cup qualification series, scoring his first senior a try in their match against the Eastern Province Kings.[4] He made his first start in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup in their defeat to the Golden Lions in Round Four of the 2016 competition.[5]

Personal life

Van Zyl's uncle – also called Ockie – was also a first class rugby player between 2004 and 2013. He played Super Rugby for the Cheetahs and domestic rugby for the Griffons, Griquas, Free State Cheetahs and French side Racing Métro 92.
