OC Transpo routes

OC Transpo is a public transit authority that operates about 160 bus routes (as of January 2017)^[1] in the Ottawa-Gatineau region of Canada. It also operates the O-Train.

Overview

Route colours

Grey: These routes generally operate seven days a week, from about 6:00 AM to midnight Monday through Saturday, and from about 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM on Sundays and most holidays. However, if a route, or a section of a route, does not operate during certain time periods, it will be gray on the bus stop flag. Some routes provide morning service as early as 4:00 AM on weekdays, and 5:00 AM on Saturdays. Ottawa's four major Transitway routes (61, 62, 95 and 97) also provide early morning service on Sundays. Route 95 operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, while route 97 operates 24 hours a day Mondays-Saturdays. The fare on regular black routes is currently $3.40 cash, $3.35 with a Presto card, or two bus tickets.^[2] Also signifies limited service, which means that these routes usually run from 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM or 9:00 PM on weekdays. Some routes, such as route 161, operate with limited service between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, with some operating with limited service after 6 PM. There is usually no weekend service on these route if they run during the week. A few only run on weekends and/or weekday evenings. The fare on grey routes is currently $3.40 cash, $3.35 with a Presto card, or two bus tickets.^[2]

Purple: These routes generally operate Monday through Friday from around 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM and from around 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. All purple routes travel towards downtown Ottawa in the morning, and towards the suburbs in the afternoon. Most purple routes travel to suburban areas, but some of them also travel to rural areas. The fare on purple routes is currently $3.40 cash, $3.35 with a Presto card, or two bus tickets.^[2]

Blue: Blue is used to signify Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes that will service the region after the Confederation Line opens in 2018.

Orange: Orange is used to signify frequent service that will operate every 15 minutes or less Monday-Friday from 6:00am–7:00pm and 30 minutes or less at all other times.

Route numbers

OC Transpo classes its routes according to the following numerical groups:^[1]

1: Route 1 will be used for the O-Train Confederation Line.

2: Route 2 is used for the O-Train Trillium Line.

4-19: These are mainline or local routes that operate to/from or through downtown along major roads or in urban communities. These routes generally serve Rideau Street as opposed to Mackenzie King Station (except route 8, route 16, and route 19).

20-29: These are routes serving Gloucester.

30-39: These are routes serving Orleans.

40-49: These are routes serving Ottawa East.

50-59: These are routes serving Ottawa West.

60-69: These are routes serving Kanata and Stittsville.

70-79: These are future routes serving Barrhaven.

80-89: This series is being phased in as routes serving Nepean. Similar to routes 4-19, some remain mainline routes through downtown along major roads, spending more time on the Transitway.

90-99: These are rapid transit routes that travel between the suburbs and downtown, spending almost all of their route on the Transitway, Highway 417, or Ottawa Road 174. Routes 91, 92, 93, Route 94, route 95, route 97, route 98 and route 99 are currently the routes offering such service. Route 91 was introduced on 28 June 2015 and is in service until 2018 while part of the Transitway is closed for Confederation Line construction.^[3]

100-109: For the most part, these routes are peak-only routes (except route 101, route 104, route 106) that provide service between a Transitway station and major employment areas. In the future, OC Transpo plans to expand their rapid transit service to have routes numbered from 100-109, which would bypass downtown. Routes 101 and 106 are the first two routes to provide this service. Route 107 is used as a rapid-transit bus route when the O-Train is undergoing maintenance or repairs.

110-119: These are regular routes that travel cross-town, but bypass downtown. Route 112 is an exception as it is a local route for residents near Heron Road and Billings Bridge Station.

120-199: These are mostly local routes that usually connect residential areas or business areas to Transitway stations. A few, remain cross-town routes. Local routes may also include special school trips to various middle and high schools, similar to the 600-series routes. This number range also includes a number of special rush hour routes that connect major suburban and rural employment areas to the Transitway.

200-299: These are peak period routes connecting downtown Ottawa to suburban areas, running towards downtown in the morning and to the suburbs in the afternoon. The 220s serve Gloucester. The 230s serve Orleans. The 250s serve Ottawa West. The 260s serve Kanata and Stittsville. The 270s serve Barrhaven. The 280s serve Nepean. The 290s serve South Keys.

301-305: These are special "shopper's" bus routes, providing links from rural communities to various urban shopping centres.

401-406: These routes provide special service to and from Canadian Tire Centre for Ottawa Senators games and concerts, and other events.

450-456: These routes provide special service to and from TD Place Stadium for major sporting events (such as Ottawa Redblacks and Ottawa Fury FC games), concerts, and other events.^[4][5]

500-599: These are rural service routes operated by partner bus lines (not OC Transpo).

600-699: These routes are special school routes. These routes are usually not shown on the bus stop flag except at Transitway stations, mall terminals, and on streets where no other bus service is available.

900-999: These are employee shuttles for OC Transpo employees only at times and places with no service (mostly overnight).

In 2011, OC Transpo created a business plan which called for many of their routes to be combined to reduce OC Transpo's operating costs. The plan called for a complete overhaul of the route network city-wide. Most well-used routes, such as rapid transit and express routes, remained largely unchanged. The majority of changes came from local and peak period service, which either served areas already served by other routes, or ridership on such routes did not meet certain requirements. OC Transpo also overhauled the buses used on certain routes and is in the process of replacing older, lower-capacity models with higher-capacity, more fuel-efficient buses, until the new light rail line can be fully implemented.^[6]

The list of route changes was posted on OC Transpo's website. The posted changes were implemented on September 4, 2011.^[7]

O-Train routes

Blue rapid routes

These routes provide crosstown Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) services 7 days/week, some exceptions apply.

	62	St. Laurent Station Hurdman Station	Stittsville Station Terry Fox Station	Provides a direct connection to the Ottawa Train Station on Tremblay Road. Doesn't operate south of Palladium Drive on weekends. Selected weekday evening and weekend trips are extended from Terry Fox Station to Tanger Outlet and then return immediately to end at Terry Fox Station. Before 12:00 PM Monday-Friday, eastbound buses travel via Fringewood between Abbott Street East and Hazeldean Road, while westbound buses travel via Iber. After 12:00 PM Monday-Friday, buses follow the reverse direction on both roads. Effective 3 September 2017: Late evening and weekend service between Terry Fox and Tanger Oulet will be replaced by route 162.

Orange frequent routes

These routes generally operate 7 days/week from 6 AM to midnight Monday-Saturday and 7 AM to 11 PM on Sundays.
These routes operate every 15 minutes or better from 6 AM to 7 PM and 30 minutes or better at all other times.

Buses used to travel via Queen Street, but has been on detour due to the construction of the Confederation Line. Service between Carleton University and Hurdman Station was replaced by rapid route 104.
	6	Greenboro Station Billings Bridge Station	Rockcliffe Rideau Centre	Serves the communities of New Edinburgh, Lowertown, Centretown, The Glebe, Old Ottawa South, Ridgemont, and South Keys. Also serves major tourist attractions including the ByWard Market, the Rideau Centre, TD Place/Lansdowne Park. Early-morning service runs between Greenboro and the Rideau Centre only. Southbound early-morning trips stay on Bank Street instead of travelling via Southgate. Extra peak-period trips are provided from Billings Bridge to the Rideau Centre in the morning and the reverse in the afternoon. Extra service is provided in both directions between Billings Bridge and the Rideau Centre when special events are taking place at TD Place/Lansdowne Park.

Overnight trips are extended to/from downtown via Highway 417, Nicholas, Rideau, and Albert (westbound)/Slater (eastbound).
	111	Carleton University Billings Bridge Station	Baseline Station	Serves the communities of Carleton Heights and Parkwood Hills in Nepean. Doesn't travel between Billings Bridge and Carleton University during the late evenings or weekends.
	114	Greenboro Station Conroy	St. Laurent Station	Effective 3 September 2017: Will be replaced by route 40. Serves the communities of South Keys, Greenboro, and Elmvale Acres in southeast Ottawa. Selected peak-period trips start/end at the corner of St. Laurent and Conroy, in the Ottawa South Business Park.

Grey local routes

These routes provide local service throughout the region. Most generally run from 6 AM to midnight Monday-Saturday, and 7 AM to 11 PM on Sundays. There are some exceptions to watch out for, however.

	19	St. Laurent Station	Bank Station	Serves the communities of Sandy Hill, Lowertown, and Vanier.
	21	Canotek	Blair Station	Operates during peak periods only Monday-Friday. Travels via Ottawa Road 174 and Montreal Road to/from the Canotek Business Park, located in the northeastern part of Gloucester, Ontario.
	22	Millennium Station	Bay Station/Lebreton Station	Became a peak-only route as express routes were eliminated in December 2016. Serves the eastern portion of Orléans via Trim, Springridge, Portobello, Valin, Innes, and the Millennium Sports Park.
	23	Rothwell Heights	Blair Station	Performs a one-way loop throughout the community of Rothwell Heights. Operates during peak periods and provides limited service during midday Monday-Friday only. No weekend service.
	24	Beacon Hill	St. Laurent Station Blair Station	Performs a one-way loop throughout the community of Beacon Hill North. Early-morning trips Monday-Friday end at Blair Station. Weekend late evening trips start/end at Blair Station.
	26	Blair Station	Pineview	Performs a one-way loop throughout the Pineview community. No Sunday late evening service.
	28	Blair Station	Blackburn Hamlet	Selected afternoon peak trips end at the corner of Southpark and Innes. Sunday service only operates from approximately 9 AM to 7 PM. Sunday trips don't serve the local streets in Blackburn Hamlet, but instead use Bearbrook Road and start/end at the Blackburn Arena.
	30	Millennium Station Jeanne d'Arc	Blair Station Lebreton Station	There is no service south of Innes during the late evenings Monday-Saturday and during the evenings on Sunday.

	37	Place d'Orleans Station	Queenswood Heights	Effective 3 September 2017: Will replace route 137 and follow the same routing, operating Monday-Friday only, with limited service provided outside of peak hours and follow a one-way loop throughout the Queenswood Heights community.
	38	Jeanne d'Arc	Bay Station/Lebreton Station	Serves northern Orléans along Jeanne d'Arc and North Service. Starts/ends near the corner of Trim/Regional Road 174.
	42	Blair Station	Hurdman Station	Serves the Cyrville Industrial Park and the Ottawa Trainyards shopping district. Extra trips are provided during peak periods between Hurdman Station and the corner of Cyrville and Labrie. No late evening service Monday-Friday. No evenings service on weekends.
	47	Hawthorne	St. Laurent Station	Operates during peak periods only Monday-Friday. Serves both the Ottawa and Hawthorne Industrial Parks.
	48	Hurdman Station Billings Bridge Station	Elmvale Acres	Travels via Bank, Kilborn, Canterbury, Halifax, Walkley, and St. Laurent. Serves Canterbury High School. Doesn't travel between Billings Bridge and Hurdman on weekends.
	49	Hurdman Station	Elmvale Acres	Travels via Pleasant Park. Limited service is provides outside of peak hours Monday-Friday. Saturday service only operates from approximately 9 AM to 7 PM. Sunday service only operates from approximately 9 AM to 6 PM.
	50	Tunney's Pasture Station	Lincoln Fields Station	Travels via Scott between Tunney's Pasture and Westboro. Serves the communities of Westboro, Laurentian View, Bel Air Heights, and Kenson Park. Purple routes (peak periods)

These routes operate Monday-Friday only from approximately 6 AM to 9 AM and 3 PM to 6 PM. The majority of these routes were express routes until January 2017, which required a premium fare. OC Transpo eliminated the express routes and made them peak-only and Connexion routes. The Connexion routes will provide residents living in the suburbs with a direct connection to the Confederation Line, set to open in 2018.

Canadian Tire Connexion routes 401 through 406 operate on all dates with Ottawa Senators games and also events or concerts of medium to large attendance (6,000 persons or over). Each route serves a different part of Ottawa and provides connections to the Canadian Tire Centre.^[9]

These routes were formally known as Connexion routes, until the re-branding of express routes in December 2016.

On Track 2018

Ottawa is currently in the process of constructing a LRT system through the downtown core. Opening in 2018, the Confederation Line will replace most buses downtown. As a result, most routes will be re-numbered to reflect the new LRT line.

O-Train

These two routes are Ottawa's light rail routes that will be in service in 2018.
