North 1 East is an English Rugby Union League at the sixth tier of the domestic competition (Prior to 2009/10 it was known as North 2 East, prior to 2000/01 it was known as North 2).
North 1 East is made up of teams from around Northeastern England (principally Northumberland, County Durham and Yorkshire) who play home and away matches throughout a winter season. Promotion and relegation determine the makeup of the league each season, with the top team automatically moving into National League 3 North. The second placed team enters into a play-off match with the second placed team in North 1 West. The bottom three teams drop into the top divisions of local rugby - Durham/Northumberland 1 and Yorkshire 1.
Occasionally, depending on promotion and relegation to/from National League 3 North, from North 1 East and North 1 West, teams from either of those leagues may be required to compete in the opposite league for one season to ensure that the number of teams in the East and West leagues remain at 14 teams each.
