Nino Machaidze (Georgian: ნინო მაჩაიძე; born 1983, Tbilisi) is a Georgian Lyric Dramatic coloratura soprano.[1]

Education and first steps

Nino Machaidze was born and raised in Tblisi, in the republic of Georgia. At the age of seven she began piano and vocal lessons at a school affiliated with the Tblisi State Conservatory, which she later also attended. At the age of 17, she sang Norina in Don Pasquale at Tbilisi’s Paliashvili Theatre, followed by Zerlina (from Mozart's 'Don Giovanni') and Rosina (from Rossini's 'Barber of Seville') She was then accepted at the Academy for young artists at La Scala, Milan. In 2006 she won the Leyla Gencer Vocal Competition.

Career

In the same year, she made her debut at La Scala singing Marie, the lead in Donizetti's 'La fille du régiment', which she also reprised at the Rome Opera.

Her breakthrough came after being spotted as Lauretta in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi at La Scala, under Riccardo Chailly, leading to the opportunity to play Juliette in the Salzburg Festival in 2008 in Gounod's Romeo et Juliette opposite Rolando Villazón.The Salzburg Festival needed a replacement for Anna Netrebko, who was pregnant, for the new production of Gounod's 'Roméo et Juliette', alongside Rolando Villazon. The young soprano prepared this new role in only one month, and her interpretation was a great success,[2][3] launching her international career.
