Nicola Stevens (born 24 March 1993 in Brunswick, Victoria) is an Australian rules footballer with the Carlton Football Club in the AFL Women's competition.
Early life and state league football
Growing up with family members involved at Essendon Football Club, Stevens started in Auskick and continued playing local football throughout her childhood.[1] In 2013 Stevens advanced to Melbourne University Women's Football Club, and played as a key defender in VWFL and VFL Women's.[3]
Stevens was selected eighteenth overall by Western Bulldogs in the inaugural women's draft in 2013. She continued to play for the Bulldogs in AFL exhibition games through 2016,[4] aside from missing the 2014 season for anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.[5]
AFL Women's career
Collingwood (2017)
Stevens was Collingwood’s first selection, sixth overall, in the 2016 AFL Women's draft,[2] considered by Collingwood coach Wayne Siekman to be the best defender in the draft.[3]
At the end of the season, Stevens was listed in the 2017 All-Australian team.[6] The next day, she was announced as Collingwood’s first AFL Women’s best and fairest.[2]
Carlton (2018–present)
On 16 May 2017, Stevens was traded to Carlton. She was packaged with Collingwood's fourth round draft selection in exchange for Carlton's first, second and third draft choices in the 2017 AFL Women's draft.[7]
