NetMotion Software is a privately held software company specializing in mobile performance management.[3][4][5] Founded in 2001 and based in Seattle, Washington, NetMotion develops software for organizations with mobile workforces so they can manage, optimize, accelerate and secure traffic to mobile devices.[6] The company's software is used in utilities, healthcare, telecommunication, public safety, government, insurance and manufacturing.[6]

History

The company was formed in 2001 as a spin-off from WRQ, Inc. In 2006, NetMotion merged with Padcom, Inc.[7] In September 2010[8] and again in 2011,[9] the company was recognized by Inc. as one of the fastest-growing private companies in America. In September 2012, NetMotion was acquired by Clearlake Capital Group, L.P.[10] Under Clearlake's ownership, NetMotion expanded into the European and Asia Pacific markets and reportedly achieved 500 percent growth.[11] In July 2016, Christopher Kenessey was named CEO.[12] One month later, global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group acquired the company.[11]

Operations

The bulk of the company's operations are located at the North American headquarters in Seattle, Washington. Three sales offices in Europe handle international sales including sales into Australia, New Zealand and several African countries.[13]

NetMotion has an intellectual property portfolio of 15 U.S. patents.[14] It maintains telecom partnerships with Verizon Wireless, Telus, Sprint, Rogers, Bell and AT&T, and technology alliances with hardware and software providers AirWatch, Android, ClickSoftware, Feeney Wireless, iOS, Microsoft, Panasonic, Samsung, Sierra Wireless, Splunk and Trimble. There are also more than 40 channel partners.[15]

Products

NetMotion products are built on an architecture it terms software-defined mobility.[16] Fundamentally, it consists of client software on each mobile device, which communicates with a control server in the cloud or data center that pushes policies and actions to the client for execution.[17] Through this architecture that gives administrators control of the endpoints, they can manage application delivery based on changing network conditions through software, regardless of the combination of networks used,[16] including cellular and Wi-Fi networks that are outside of their direct administrative control.[17]

NetMotion Mobility

The company's flagship product is NetMotion Mobility (formerly known as Mobility XE),[1] a Mobile VPN designed specifically for wireless environments. As mobile field workers move in and out of wireless coverage areas and roam between networks, the product maintains and secures their data connections in order to maximize worker productivity.[18][19][20][21] It also applies compression-accleration technologies for faster throughput and lower data costs,[22] and provides IT managers with the centralized control needed to manage a mobile deployment.[23] Used by more than 3,500 organizations[24] and more than 800,000 mobile workers,[25] Mobility XE has been recognized by Frost & Sullivan for achieving the highest market share among mobile VPNs.[26]

Mobility XE Releases:[27]

NetMotion Diagnostics[2]

In May 2012, NetMotion introduced Locality cellular network performance management software,[32] later renamed as NetMotion Diagnostics.[2] On initial release, it was described as the first software of its kind in the industry,[33] and the only cellular counterpart to a wired network-performance management offering.[34] It addresses the needs of organizations that are increasingly reliant on cellular data connections to deliver applications to mobile workers in the field. Such organizations have made major investments in devices, applications and monthly service fees, yet have no tools to evaluate how those deployments are working for them and to identify and correct connection problems.[32]

The software on each mobile device gathers inventory, connection-status and location information every five seconds, and sends the accumulated data every thirty minutes to a central server for processing.[35][36] Based on this data, it generates detailed maps and reports to identify the technologies in use, poor performance, and chronic connectivity problems. These can be tied to underlying causes such as signal strength, location, network saturation, older network technologies, or problems with devices and drivers.[34] Customers can use these reports to proactively identify coverage issues, troubleshoot help desk tickets, make buying decisions based on device or network performance, compare carriers, effectively track inventory, and identify under-utilized mobile assets.[34]

In January 2015, with the addition of alerting capability and the ability to launch a battery of tests to diagnose various connection problems, the product was renamed Diagnostics.[2]

Mobile IQ

In May 2017, NetMotion announced the launch of Mobile IQ, described as a visualization, analytics and alerting platform for enterprise mobile deployments. Built on Splunk Enterprise,[43] Mobile IQ collects data from mobile devices in the field and visualizes it through interactive dashboards. It allows IT teams to evaluate user experiences and troubleshoot devices operating both inside and outside the corporate firewall, across both Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The information allows teams to make operational decisions, analyze security threats, and effectively support mobile employees.[44]

The five categories of dashboards include system summary, diagnostic reports, Wi-Fi security, WWAN and devices.[45] Operators can use these context-sensitive dashboards to drill down to uncover patterns and insights, and understand if mobile issues are widespread or confined to certain locations, devices or users. The information has applications in evaluating usage patterns, inspecting Wi-Fi performance, detecting device problems and subsequent root-cause analysis, controlling costs, mapping carrier performance, identifying network security issues, and detecting lost or stolen devices through location intelligence.[44]
