Naval Tactical Staff (Swedish: Marinens taktiska stab, MTS) is a part of the Operations Command (Insatsledningen) of the Swedish Armed Forces. The staff is located at the Swedish Armed Forces Headquarters in Stockholm and is headed by the Chief of Navy. The Naval Tactical Staff commands the operations of the Swedish Navy forces.[1]

History

The current staff was established in September 1993 under the name of the Naval Tactical Center (Marinens taktiska centrum, MTC)[2] which has its origin in the Naval Staff which was disbanded in connection with the Swedish Armed Forces becoming a single government agency in 1994. The Naval Staff was partly replaced by the Naval Command (Marinledningen) on 1 July 1994.[3] On 1 July 1998, the Naval Center (Marincentrum, MarinC) was established when the Chief of Navy Staff position was replaced by the Inspector General of the Navy position on 30 June 1998.[4]

By the 2000 Defense Bill, where the four regional Naval Command (Marinkommando) were disbanded on 30 June 2000, the Naval Center was also disbanded as an independent unit. From 1 July 2000, the Naval Center was amalgamated in the Operational Operations Command (Operativa insatsledningen, OPIL) under the name Naval Tactical Command (Marintaktiska kommandot, MTK).[5][6] In 2003, the Inspector General of the Navy position was changed to Inspector of the Navy. On 1 April 2007, the command was reorganized and received its current name, the Naval Tactical Staff (Marinens taktiska stab, MTS), and is sorted under the Operations Command (Insatsledningen).
