Naukan, (Russian: Наукан, Eskimo: нывукак " Soddy ") is a deserted Eskimo village on Cape Dezhnev, Russia. Prior to 1958, it was the easternmost settlement of Eurasia, then gave way to the title Uelen.

History

Naukan was founded approximately in the 14th century. In 1648, near Naukan was defeated one of kochey Semyon Dezhnev, who is now on the site is worth several monuments, including a bust on Mount Ingegruk, wooden cross in 1910 built lighthouse and a monument to the architect- B. K. Semenenko (1956).

The settlement was disbanded in 1958 as part of the enlargement campaign in rural areas. Before the eviction in Naukan occurred, approximately 400 people lived in the village across 13 generations. The eviction took place in 1954, however, with the strategic objective of a possible military confrontation with the United States; it formally ended on November 20, 1958. The year the decision of № 165 of the Executive Committee of the Chukotka District Council of People's Deputies occurred. The Naukan people were relocated, being partially settled with the Chukchi, or moved to places with other Siberian Yupik. Most of the Naukan people were relocated to the village of Nunyamo, which no longer exists. Today, there are families of Yupik Naukan Eskimos living in Chukchi settlements Uelen, Lavrentiya, and Lorino as well as in Siberian Eskimo villages Chaplino, Sireniki and Uelkal and in the cities of Anadyr, Magadan, Vologda .
