Chamber Choir Ireland
Garnering a strong reputation for its unique approach to creative commissioning, recording and programming, CHAMBER CHOIR IRELAND, formerly known as the National Chamber Choir of Ireland, is the country’s flagship choral ensemble and national chamber choir under the Artistic Direction of the multi-award-winning conductor, Paul Hillier, primarily funded by the Irish Arts Council /an Chomhairle Ealaíon.
Their programmes span from early renaissance to the present day, incorporating established choral classics with cutting edge commissions, and a style of performance that incorporates versatility, dynamism and often vocal pyrotechnics. Chamber Choir Ireland performances have been described as having a tone which is ‘liquid in its power and purity’ with a ‘strong vocal flexibility of style’ (Belfast Telegraph). International touring has included the USA, Russia, South America and Germany and the choir has recorded for the Harmonia Mundi, Orchid Classics and RTÉ Lyric FM labels.
Artistic directors
Since his appointment in June 2008 the Artistic Director has been the British conductor Paul Hillier. From May 2002 to January 2007 the choir's conductor was Brazilian conductor Celso Antunes, who succeeded founding Artistic Director Colin Mawby.
Guest conductors
In addition to working with international guest conductors including James Woods, Nils Schweckendiek, David Hill, Stephen Cleobury, Stephen Layton, Bo Holton etc., the Choir also provides opportunities for young Irish conductors by supporting emerging talent[1][2] on the conducting scene.
Commissions
Since its inception, Chamber Choir Ireland has regularly commissioned choral work by both Irish and International composers such as Gerald Barry (composer), Ian Wilson, Andrew Hamilton, Siobhán Cleary, Kevin Volans, Tarik O'Regan, and Jennifer Walshe.
Touring
Chamber Choir Ireland regularly tours throughout the island of Ireland, presenting choral concerts to audiences all around the country. Internationally, the Choir has toured extensively in Europe, Asia and North and South America including performances at the White House for President Barack Obama on St Patrick’s Day 2011.
Recording
Recent releases include "Barry Meets Beethoven"[3] a 2016 recording of works by Gerald Barry, also featuring the Crash Ensemble on the Orchid Classics Label that received 5* reviews from Gramophone Magazine, BBC Music Magazine and the Irish Times amongst others. Other recordings include "Carols From The Old & New Worlds Vol. 2" on the Harmonia Mundi label, "One Day Fine"[4] on the RTE Lyric FM label and "Acallam na Senórach"[5] on the Harmonia Mundi label, as well as a recording to accompany the publication of "Choirland: An Anthology of Irish Choral Music"[6] in collaboration with the Contemporary Music Centre and the Association of Irish Choirs.
Collaborations
Chamber Choir Ireland also performs and collaborates with other ensembles and organisations both at home and abroad including the Crash Ensemble, Theatre of Voices, Irish Baroque Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Irish Chamber Orchestra, Contemporary Music Centre, and the Association of Irish Choirs. The Choir also collaborates with Cork International Choral Festival where, as Choir in Residence, it performs newly commissioned works at its annual Seminar.
Funding
Principal funding for Chamber Choir Ireland comes from the Arts Council /an Chomhairle Ealaíon, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland National Lottery Fund, and Dublin City Council.
