Narta Lagoon is a protected area and one of the biggest lagoons in Albania. It is located in the southern edge of shores near Vlora. There is a general area of 41.8 km2, about 1/3 of which is used for Skoefotina saltwork. This lagoon extends to the SE area of the Vlora Bay and is separated from the Adriatic Sea by a narrow littoral strip consisting of an alluvial dune of about 8 km wide and a width of 100 to 1400 m. It is formed by the constant accumulation of solid flow of the Vjosa River.[1]
Narta Lagoon is named after the village of Nartë, which is found on the lagoon's southern shores. In the lagoon are two islands. The larger one is named Zvërnec Island. A wooden footbridge connects Nartë to the island, where a 13th-century monastery is located.
