Narora Atomic Power Station (NAPS) is located in Narora, Bulandshahar District in Uttar Pradesh, India. The plant is thus placed 68 km from the district headquarters in Bulandshahr, 502 km from Mussoorie, 303 km from Lucknow.

Reactors

The plant houses two reactors, each a pressurized heavy-water reactor (PHWR) capable of producing 220 MW of electricity. Commercial operation of NAPS-1 began on 1 January 1991, NAPS-2 on 1 July 1992.^[1]

With India not being a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons the reactors are not under IAEA safeguards.^[2]

Incidents

31 May 1993 after 28 months of operation two steam turbine blades in NAPS-1 malfunctioned causing a major fire. This in combination with problems in the reactor's cabling system nearly lead to a nuclear meltdown.^[2]

In September 1999 an inner airlock door in NAPS-2 malfunctioned causing an immediate reactor shutdown that lasted approximately one month. Around the same time a minor leak of tritium occurred. By December 1999 the plant had undergone certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards and in 2000 NAPS voluntarily underwent a review by the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), earning it the first ISO 14001 certificate in Asia as well as a Golden Peacock Award from the World Environment Foundation.^[2]
