Nam Woo-hyun (Hangul: 남우현; Hanja: 南優賢; born February 8, 1991),[1] commonly known by his mononym Woohyun, is a South Korean singer, composer, songwriter and actor. He made his official debut in 2010 as a main vocalist in the boy band Infinite.[2]

He officially made his debut as a solo artist in May 2016 with his first mini-album Write... It includes a total of 7 songs (6 plus a hidden track), 4 of which are self-composed.[3]

Biography

Nam Woo Hyun was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea. He graduated from Dong-ah Institute of Media and Arts, majoring in Applied Music.[4] He has an older brother, Nam Boo Hyun, who is the owner of a popular BBQ restaurant, 먹&삼 생고기집, located in Suyu, Seoul.[5]

In an interview with 10asia, Woohyun stated that he originally aspired to be a soccer player.[6] However, he eventually realized his next dream of becoming a singer when he was in high school. He auditioned at Woollim Entertainment to pursue a career in music as a solo singer.[7] He passed the audition with a cover of Stevie Wonder's "Lately". At that point, he was accepted into Woollim along with 2 other agencies, one of which being YG Entertainment.[8] He ultimately decided to go with Woollim and began training as an idol trainee.

Prior to debuting with Infinite, Woohyun was a model for a shopping mall alongside Beast's Jun-hyung and T-ara's Ji-yeon.[9] He competed in the 6th Hello Star Contest performing Lee Hyori's U Go Girl.[10] In one of his first broadcast appearances, he played the lead role in KooPD's music video for 귀가 멀어 in 2007.[11] Later in 2009, he appeared on Mnet's 소녀펀치 (Girl Punch) and sang Lee Seung-gi's 하기 힘든 말 (Words that are hard to say).[12]

Well known for his fan service, Woohyun once spent 3 million won to give fans silver rings and flowers during INFINITE's 2013 World Tour, One Great Step.[13]

On November 1, it was announced that he would be leaving the show due to Infinite's upcoming Japanese promotions, and his final episode was aired November 5.[16] He later made two more additional appearances on the show, once by himself in January 2012,[17] and again with group mate Sunggyu in December 2012.[18]

In 2012, his career in musical theatre began with a supporting role in the musical Gwanghwamun Sonata. Woohyun and Sunggyu shared the role of Jiyong, the son of the female lead.[19] The musical ran in Korea from January 3 to March 11, 2012, and in Japan from January 4 to January 6, 2013.

Under the banner 'The Color of K-pop', Dramatic Blue released and performed the track "Tearfully Beautiful", produced by Sweetune.[22]

In February 2013, he released a duet song titled "선인장" (Cactus) with South Korean Indie Singer, Lucia.[23] It is a cover of Epitone Project's song of the same, and was included as part of a special project album, Re;code.[24]

In April 2014, Woohyun was cast in a lead role for the KBS drama Hi! School: Love On alongside Kim Sae-ron and group mate Lee Sung-yeol, playing the character Shin Woohyun. The drama aired once a week on Fridays from July 11 to December 19, 2014.[29] He released a soundtrack "사랑이 올 때" (When Love Comes) for SBS drama Modern Farmer on October 24, 2014.[30] In December 2014, Woohyun debuted as direct film with directing horror short film, 홍콩에서 생긴일 (What Happened in Hong Kong).[31] Woohyun currently plays as a striker for the South Korean celebrity football club, FC Men. Having previously played for FC One, he was recruited to FC Men in early 2015.[32] He made his football debut with FC Men on May 17, 2015, in a charity match against Jeju United FC.[33]
