Nam Tae-hyun (born May 10, 1994), also known as Taehyun, is a South Korean singer-songwriter and actor. He is a former member of the K-pop group Winner, in which he was a main vocalist and was also involved in the production of the group's tracks. He is currently the lead singer of the band South Club.

Life and career

Pre-debut: WIN: Who Is Next and Winner TV

Prior to his debut as a member of Winner, Taehyun performed as a backup dancer for the YG Family Concert 2011.[2]

In 2013, he competed in the reality program WIN: Who Is Next as a trainee in "Team A", which went on to debut as Winner.[3] Nam co-composed and co-wrote two songs that were used to compete on the show. That year, Taehyun also made a cameo appearance in his label-mate Taeyang's music video for "Ringa Linga".[4] In December, he appeared on Winner's own variety program, Winner TV, which aired on Mnet.

2014–2015: Official debut, 2014 S/S, and television appearances

Taehyun participated in the production of Winner's debut album, 2014 S/S, which was released in August 2014. He co-composed three songs from the album – "But (사랑하지마)", "Tonight (이 밤)" and his solo track "Confession (고백하는거야)". The album topped several charts, including the Gaon Music Chart as well as the Billboard's World Albums Chart.[5] Nam, along with the other members, appeared on shows such as Weekly Idol and You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook to promote their songs.

In 2015, while the group was on hiatus, Nam made his acting debut in the web drama Midnight Girl. That same year, he played a supporting role in the drama Late Night Restaurant.

2016: EXIT : E, television appearances, and departure from Winner

In January 2016, Taehyun released the single "Pricked" (사랑가시) in collaboration with Mino as a warm-up track ahead of Winner's comeback mini-album Exit : E. The single charted at no.2 on MelOn and was no.1 on iTunes in 9 countries, including Singapore, Thailand and Brunei.[6]

After nearly 18 months of hiatus, Winner's comeback mini-album Exit : E was released on February 1. The album featured five tracks, including "Pricked", and double title tracks "Baby Baby" and "센치해 (Sentimental)". Taehyun played a major role in the production of both title tracks, as well as for his solo "좋더라 (I'm Young)". The mini-album topped the iTunes charts in 11 countries, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines, and peaked at no.2 and no.3 on Billboard's World Albums Chart and Heatseekers Albums Chart respectively. The music videos for "Baby Baby", "I'm Young" and "Sentimental" reached no.1, no.2 and no.3 on China's QQ Music Overall MV Chart and K-pop MV Chart.[7] In Korea, the title tracks "Baby Baby" and "Sentimental" topped 8 major charts, including MelOn, Naver and Mnet.[8] "Baby Baby" also became Winner's first song to hit a roof on MelOn. It was widely praised by netizens due to its unique bluesy melody and usage of a 6/8 beat, while most songs commonly use a 4/4 beat.[9] The song was seen as refreshing and well-made, and its ability, as a unique song, to top the competitive charts in Korea further appalled netizens.[10] Nam composed the song during a difficult period in his life. He said in an interview, '"Baby Baby" is a bit different, not because I had a hard time making it, but because I made it during a hard time, I have a special affection for it.'[11]

Nam appeared again on You Hee-yeol's Sketchbook with his group in February 2016. In March, he guested in one of China's most popular show Happy Camp, appeared on JTBC's Two Yoo Project Sugar Man, and starred in tvN's Actor School. Actor School is a variety show featuring seven stars going through a series of trainings by actor Park Shin-yang, in order to brush up on their acting skills.[12]

In April 2016, Taehyun, alongside Winner, appeared on JTBC's new show Half-Moon Friends. The show saw Winner running a day care center, where they spent time and communicated with children, aged 4 to 7, from double-income families.[13] Both the Winner members and the children have experienced periods of loneliness in their lives,[14] and hence are "incomplete" like half-moons. Thus, the show is named "Half-Moon friends" to represent 2 half-moons, Winner and the children, coming together to make friends with one another and to form a full moon. Half-Moon Friends garnered over 32,000,000 views in total on China's video-streaming app Miaopai, with an average of 6,000,000 views for each episode.[15] Also in April, he appeared as a guest on the popular Korean variety show Running Man, alongside Song Min-ho and Girl's Day's Lee Hye-ri.

On October 12, YG Entertainment stated that Taehyun would be halting promotional activities and receiving treatment for mental health issues. As a result, Winner's comeback was delayed indefinitely.[16] Later, on November 25, it was announced that he had withdrawn from the group and had terminated his contract with YG Entertainment.[17] The next day, he posted a handwritten letter on his personal Instagram account containing his apology, gratitude to fans and pledge to return with other music and projects.[18]

2017–present: Music creations and South Buyers Club

Taehyun continues sharing his music creations and covers on his SoundCloud account,[19] including a cover of Radiohead's "Creep", Park Hyo-shin's "Beautiful Tomorrow", and "Breath (숨)". His influences arise from artists across many genres, such as Nirvana, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, and Eric Clapton. He then created a Tumblr site on January 5,[20] posting announcements and communicating with fans from time to time. On January 23, Taehyun posted several pictures of him painting what seemed like a studio on his Instagram account.[21] He had previously indicated interest in owning his own studio and starting a band. In February, Taehyun started following the accounts of 4 Korean musicians on Instagram - Kang Kun Ku,[22] Solomon Kim,[23] Jang Won Young[24] and Choi Yoon Hwi.[25] This led to speculations that they were his new bandmates. Based on several pictures posted on both Taehyun's Instagram account and of his rumored bandmates, fans believed that the band was to be named "South Club".

Taehyun announced on his Tumblr site on March 14 that he (and his band) is currently working hard on an album or EP. He mentioned that they already have a few songs ready, and will meet the fans soon.[26] On March 25, Taehyun, together with his rumored band South Club, held a guerrilla show at Pet Sounds Bar in Korea. The 30-minute show was livestreamed on platforms such as Instagram, and popular China video-sharing platform Miaopai. South Club performed a total of 4 songs, including tracks from The Beatles and Foster the People. Fans were also given a sneak peek of their possible new song.[27] Taehyun's brother, Nam Dong-hyun, was present at the show to show his support as well. On April 11, Taehyun announced to fans on Instagram, with a picture of the certificate, that his music label "South Buyers Club" has officially been registered as of March 30.[28] On May 26, South Club released the music video for their pre-release track “Hug Me,” a ballad track which features Nam Tae Hyun’s soft and melancholy voice. The music video perfectly fits with the mood of the track, and shows Nam Tae Hyun looking pensive as he moves about in his room.[29]

South Club's first EP titled 90 was released on June 27th along with music videos for the two title tracks LIAR and I got the Blues. The name of the album came from all the members of the band being born after the year 1990 and their inspiration in the 90's youth expression of freedom.

Personal life

Taehyun has a younger brother, Nam Dong-hyun. He has three cats named Barley, Polly and Jan and a Border Collie dog named Gump (after Forrest Gump).
