Naima Kay (born in 1991 in Bomela Clinic Port Shepstone [1]) is a South African Afro-Jazz sensational singer discovered by Touch Africa Records at the Jazz festival.[2]

Early life and education

Naima Kay (Lungile Khumalo) born by Ntombi khumalo in 1991 at Bomela Clinic in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. is an Afro-Jazz sensational singer in South Africa,[3] When she left school she worked as a teller at the post office where she generated stable income to financially assist her grandmother, who had raised her since the death of both her parents while she was still in primary school. While there she also wrote songs, and after a few years she went for auditions for the Durban Jazz Festival.

She schooled at the Ingwemabala Comp High, where she matriculated.

Career

She started singing and writing songs in her school choir, also performed at the jazz Festival where she began attracting attention.

She made a major impact in South Africa with the release in 2013 of Umsebenzi. The album sold very well and gained an award, South African Music Award (SAMA) in 2014 for Best Newcomer.

Kay, was discovered by the head of Touch Africa Records Mdu Ngcobo who gave her an Arabic name Naima Kay defining Peace and Tranquility.

She has maintained a strong presence, with consistent radio play and live appearances at key national events and Festivals such as UGu Jazz Festival and the Durban Jazz festival.[4]

Inspiration

Kay’s music draws strongly on her upbringing in the KwaZulu-Natal, and she sites the powerful singing of her grandmother and his brother DJ Sammy as an inspiration for her.

Awards

In 2014, Naima Kay won the "Best Newcomer" award at the South African Music Awards with her first album "Umsebenzi".[5]
