Mute is an upcoming British science fiction mystery film directed by Duncan Jones, who also co-wrote the script with Michael Robert Johnson and Damon Peoples. It will star Alexander Skarsgård, Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, revolving around a mute bartender searching for the love of his life who has mysteriously disappeared.

The film has been described by Jones as a "spiritual sequel" to his 2009 film Moon.[1][2]

Plot

Berlin. Forty years from today. Leo Beiler, a mute bartender, searches for his missing girlfriend, Naadirah, in the rolling city of immigrants where two American surgeons are the only recurring clues.[3]

Cast

Production

In November 2015, Jones announced that following Warcraft, he would direct the science fiction mystery thriller Mute, starring Alexander Skarsgård and Paul Rudd. The film was in development hell for many years but Jones always said he wished to direct it, and has described it as a "spiritual sequel" to Moon, heavily inspired by the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner.[8] During the films development, Jones had expressed his desire for Sam Rockwell to reprise his role from Moon in a cameo appearance that was to act as an epilogue for the character,[9][7] and that the film would be the second instalment in a trilogy consisting of Moon, Mute and yet to be announced third film.[10][11] Jones confirmed on May 30, 2016 that filming is intended to begin at the end of 2016 in Berlin,[12] which was again confirmed on his personal twitter where he showcased some concept art from the film.[13] In October, 2016, Justin Theroux officially joined the cast, joining Skarsgård, Rudd, Noel Clarke and Florence Kasumba.[14]

Filming

Jones announced on his Twitter that filming would begin on September 28, 2016.[15] Liberty Films UK confirmed that principal photography had begun that day.[16] The film was shot on site in Berlin by cinematographer Gary Shaw, who worked with Jones on Moon.[17] A Classic Mercedes-Benz was used in filming, as confirmed by Jones as he tweeted a photo of it on set.[18] Set pictures released by Entertainment Weekly as well as photo shared by the director on Twitter showed the film would contain a fictional "Free the 156" campaign that references the Sam Bell clones from Moon.[19]

Music

Clint Mansell will compose the film's score.[20]

Release

On October 12, 2016, it was revealed that Netflix plans to release the film in 2017, it will be released online and will also have a limited release in theaters.[21]

Marketing

The film has been heavily promoted and discussed on Jones' personal twitter, where he showed production stills and concept art. On January 6, 2017, three stills from the film were released, showing characters Leo, Cactus Bill and Duck with the back drop of the futuristic Berlin.[22][23]
