Mussa Bin Bique

Mussa Bin Bique (Arabic: موسى بن بيك), other names Musa Al Big or Mossa Al Bique or Mussa Ben Mbiki or Mussa Ibn Malik, was the first known ruler of Mozambique before the Portuguese overran Mozambique during the 1550s and the period leading to the colonial rule of much of Africa.

Background

Mussa Bin Bique was an Arab trader who first visited the island and later lived there.[1] The name of the African nation of Mozambique is derived from his name, Mozambique is the Portuguese interpretation of Mussa Bin Bique.

Legacy

As colonial history is erased from many landmarks and regional names, there is a university in Maputo bearing the name of Mozambique's ruler Mussa Bin Bique from five hundred years back called "Mussa Bin Bique University", established in 1998.[2]

Along name changes and new religious identity, the population statistics in Mozambique put its Muslim population around 20% while rural areas are under counted but believed to belong to Mussa Bin Bique's religion.[3]
