The Muskegon Pier Light or South Pierhead Light is a lighthouse located in the harbor of Muskegon, Michigan.

The site is accessible, and the lighthouse is available for tours during the summer months from noon until 4 p.m. Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

History

The first lighthouse in Muskegon was a wooden tower atop the Keeper’s Quarters built in 1851. It was situated on land. In 1871 Muskegon Breakwater Light was built on the end of the breakwater and the main light was rebuilt.^[4] In 1902, it was determined that the main light should be relocated to the south pierhead. The metalwork and steel plate used to construct the pierhead tower was delivered in 1903, and the cast iron octagonal lantern room from the 1870 lighthouse was transferred.^[5]

In 2008 the lighthouse became available for transfer under NHLPA, and in June 2010 ownership was transferred to the Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy.^[6]

Description

The Muskegon Pier Light is a round cast iron tower located at the end of the southern pier. The entire lighthouse is painted red.^[6]
