Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala is Founder, Digestive Health Institute by Dr Muffi, Mumbai, which is the first Indian Centre for Excellence in Bariatric Surgery. He is the Chairman of Institute of Minimal Invasive Surgical Sciences & Research Centre, Saifee Hospital, Mumbai and the President of IFSO- Asia Pacific chapter.

He was awarded the first international centre of excellence designation by the US based SRC (Surgical Review Corporation)[1] Mumbai He has performed bariatric surgeries on several famous personalities, including the BJP President Nitin Gadkari,[2][3] NCP's Nawab Malik, former State Cabinet minister Nitin Raut, BJP's Vinod Tawde and BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu.[4][5]

In his career of 15 years, Dr Lakdawala has conducted numerous surgeries, in India, and abroad; a trained laparoscopic surgeon, he specialises in bariatric Bariatric surgery and GI oncology surgery. He is known internationally for his pioneering work in the field of scarless bariatric surgery and is a keen researcher in the field of diabetes surgery.

In March 2017, Dr Lakdawala won the Lokmat Maharashtrian Of The Year 2017 in the Medical Category. The prestigious awards recognise and honour individuals who have contributed positively to the state. 

Personal life

Dr Muffazal was born and brought up in Mumbai. He pursued his Masters in Surgery (M.S.) from B.Y.L. Nair Hospital and completed 3 years of residency programme in general surgery, MBBS from the Grant Medical College University of Mumbai.[6] His interests lie in Cricket and Photography. He has also played under 19 cricket for Mumbai. He lives in Mumbai with his wife, Priyanka Kaul.[7] He has three Kids—Kiaan and Zhiaan and Kiara (from his first marriage to Aditi Gowitrikar). Dr Lakdawala has been a professional cricketer, playing at the national level, and is an avid photographer. 

Career

Dr Lakdawala underwent training in Bariatric Surgery with Dr Raul Rosenthal, Cleveland Clinic, United States, 2006. He was also trained at the Unit of Gastro Surgery, with Dr Piet Pattyn from the University of Ghent Hospital, Belgium, 2005 and also underwent Training in Advanced Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery with Prof. Seon Hahn Kim, Seoul, Korea, 2004. He has also been a Lecturer at B.Y.L.Nair Hospital- a teaching hospital in Mumbai.[8]

He is one of the only Indian surgeon to have demonstrated live surgery in almost every Asian country. Till date he has performed the largest number of single incision sleeve gastrectomy surgeries in the world. He is the first surgeon to conduct laparoscopic gastric bypass in India. He also successfully operated on a 30-year-old woman with unexplained body aches, to find a live worm inside her bile duct.[9]

Dr Lakdawala has performed sleeve gastrectomy surgery on Jayesh Malukani, one of the youngest Indian patient who is a 17-year-old boy.[10][11][12] He has performed Bariatric Surgery on the heaviest man in Asia who weighed all of 285 kg (627 pounds) in Tianjen, China.[13] He also successfully operated on Eman Ahmed, an Egyptian woman considered to be the heaviest in the world.[14]

He is very committed to mentoring and training training younger surgeons and is a Professor at the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences. He regularly runs live surgery workshops and has been invited to conduct teaching workshops in almost every Asian country like Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, China, South Korea, Sri Lanka and Middle East. He has the highest number of publications in bariatric surgery in India to his credit and is regularly invited to be on prestigious committees worldwide. Dr. Lakdawala is on the board of Asian Endosurgery Task Force (AETF).

Dr Lakdawala is a published author whose debut book, The Eat-Right Prescription, released in 2016, was a bestseller. Its Gujarati edition, titled Uttam Aahar Uttam Jivan, was released earlier this year to much acclaim. He is a TEDX Speaker, as well and his talk on the dangers of sugar in 2016 was very well-received.

He was awarded 'Humanitarian of the year' by the All India Human Rights Association in 2007[20] and a Silver Medal at Shirin Mehtaji Oration for ‘Obstructive Jaundice’ in 1996 .[20] He was also awarded as the Gold Medallist in Anatomy at First Year M.B.B.S.[20]
