"Mr. & Mrs. Mxyzptlk" is the thirteenth episode of the second season from The CW television series Supergirl, which aired on February 20, 2017.

Plot

Continued from the previous episode, Kara and Mon-El are about to kiss, when a mysterious individual, Mr. Mxyzptlk (pronounced mix-ee-spit-lik), suddenly shows up to declare his love for Kara, and asks her to marry him, and even conjures up a serenade. As Kara pleads to stop him Mon-El is not happy about this and tries to attack Mxy, as he had run ins with his kind; Mxy solves that problem by sending him to the DEO in only his underwear. Mxy then places Kara in a wedding dress, but after she turns him down, Mxy believes that she's playing hard to get but vows that she'll give in to him if it's the last thing she does. At the DEO, Kara learns from Mon-El and J'onn that Mxyzptlk is an alien from the 5th Dimension and is known to have encounters with Daxamites and Martians, and are known for partying but can be dangerous.

Given that all this is happening on Valentine's Day, Kara and Mon-El decides to restart their conversation while J'onn sends a message to M'gann, but Alex is stunned that Maggie hates the romantic holiday. At the bar, Winn celebrates the event by getting drunk when he is joined by an alien named Lyra (from the idyllic Starhaven, where the air smelled like cinnamon before a blight came), who immediately saves him from two individuals who were looking for a fight. Despite a lack of knowing her planet's customs (he only knew what was from the Book of the Ten-Pointed Star) Lyra asks Winn out.

Later on that evening, Kara shows up to stop a bank robbery when Mxy appears and is ready to kill the criminals with their own guns, prompting Kara to block the bullets. Mxy thinks it's just a part of the wooing process. When Kara returns to the DEO, she becomes concerned that Mxy is starting to become dangerous, leading Mon-El to seek a way to kill the imp; Kara, on the other hand, advocates a non-lethal approach, while J'onn tells Winn to check the DEO archives to find an alien artifact that can negate his powers. Afterwards, Kara and Alex return to Kara's apartment, only to discover the place is full of roses. As Kara suggests that Alex turn Valentine's Day into a holiday that she and Maggie can celebrate, they're ambushed by Parasite. Just as Kara and Mon-El are ready to fight back, Mxy, now showing up dressed like Superman, kills Parasite. This infuriates Mon-El but Kara tells him to leave; Mxy, however warns Kara that he won't stop until she says "I do" and that things could get bad for Earth very soon. At the DEO, tensions over how to deal with Mxy is reaching the boiling point between Kara and Mon-El, prompting Kara to come to the conclusion that she and Mon-El were a bad idea. When Winn finds an artifact to take out Mxy, Mon-El takes the item.

Meanwhile, Alex surprises Maggie with a Valentine's Day date, only to learn from Maggie that it was on Valentine's Day that she was thrown out of her parents' home following a letter to her friend confessing her feelings, while Winn's date with Lyra turns into a make-out session by Lyra. At the same time, Kara discovers that Mon-El is going to use the artifact on Mxyzptlk; when Mon-El and Mxy meet for their battle, Mxy transports them to a theater to face each other, only to have Mxy succeed upon taking the artifact and turn it on Mon-El. Kara arrives just in time to stop Mxy from killing Mon-El and agrees to marry Mxyzptlk, but only if it's at the Fortress of Solitude. The following morning, Mon-El tries to stop Kara from going through with this but Kara, who is upset with Mon-El, says its only way to stop Mxy from wreaking havoc on Earth. Before she leaves, Kara runs into Maggie to explain what Valentine's Day meant to Alex.

When Kara arrives at the Fortress of Solitude for her "wedding" to Mxyzptlk, she tells him it was a ruse to bring him to a location so he won't wreak havoc on Earth. Mxyzptlk is upset that Kara won't marry him, but he finds a way to get even for being jilted by using the artifact to animate the crystals to bring the statue of Kara's uncle Jor-El to life in order to attack Kara, but Kara destroys the figure and immediately seals the fortress and sets the cauldron on a destructive mode. Worried that Kara will kill herself, Mxyzptlk agrees to type in the codes to stop the catastrophe, only to discover that the codes, when typed in, spelled Mxyzptlk's name backwards, resulting in the imp being sent back to the 5th Dimension. Before he leaves, Kara tells Mxy that he can't force someone to love, but can only let it find him.

Back in National City, Winn is ready for a real first date with Lyra, who agrees to take it slow, and asks Winn take her back to his place, while Maggie throws an Valentine's Day dance for Alex to make up for the previous incident. At Kara's apartment, Mon-El shows up and apologizes to Kara. As Mon-El tries to leave, Kara says that Mxyzptlk's presence kept them from being a couple and she only pretended to think they weren't right for each other so he wouldn't try and stop the wedding. With the imp now gone, Mon-El and Kara finally start kissing.

Reception

This episode received excellent reviews. Cliff Wheatley of IGN gave the episode a 9.1/10, stating "Supergirl might have been a little late to the Valentine's Day festivities, but this episode was none the worse the wear for it. "Mr. and Mrs. Mxyzptlk" offered up an entertaining villain and a conflict that helped enrich two of the show's key romantic relationships. It captured the show at its most lighthearted and charming."[1]
