Moses Udo Moses Ukpong (born March 23, 1964 in Eket, Akwa Ibom), was a Nigerian politician, Businessman and heir to the throne of Ikot Ukpong a kingdom in Akwa Ibom, Southern Nigeria.[1] He was a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly representing Eket from 1999-2006.[2]

Background

Moses Ukpong was born into a royal family. His Father is the king of Ikot Ukpong, a village situated in Eket, Akwa Ibom, Nigeria's oil producing state. Moses was originally the second son of Udo Moses Ukpong the king of Ikot Ukpong until the death of his brother the first son. He was then given the birthright of the first son thereby making him the next in line to the throne of Ikot Ukpong. The Ukpong's are known in Eket to be rich and popularly known for ownership of vast lands in Eket.

Education

Moses Ukpong got his B.sc in Political science from University of Calabar. He also attended University of Nsukka. Moses also did short courses at Arts Educational Schools, London.

Career

He began his career as a teacher at Nduo Eduo secondary school, Eket. Several years into teaching he was promoted to a Principal and served in that position for 3 years before he meant his friend Senator Effiong Bob who convinced him to go into politics. During this period he also contributed to formation of one of Nigeria's top political party, PDP in the Southern part of Nigeria. He was among the first people to contest for election under the People's Democratic Party in Nigeria in 1998. He ran for Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 1998 and was a two term office holder.[3] He served as a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly during the reign of Akpan Isemin and Victor Attah former governors of Akwa Ibom State. After serving his terms, he was still politically active until he was ill.

Death

He died November 15, 2009 after a brief illness.
