Montolieu Oliphant-Murray, 1st Viscount Elibank
Montolieu Fox Oliphant Murray, 1st Viscount Elibank DL, JP (27 April 1840 – 20 February 1927) was a Scottish nobleman.
The eldest son of Alexander Oliphant-Murray, 9th Lord Elibank and Emily Montgomery, he was educated privately and entered the Royal Navy in 1854. In 1860 he served in the Second Opium War aboard HMS Cambrian (medal and Taku clasp). He later served in the corvette HMS Wolverine during the Jamaica Rebellion of 1865. He retired in 1870 with the rank of Commander.
He succeeded his father as 10th Lord Elibank in 1871. He was Lord Lieutenant of Peeblesshire from 1896-1908. In 1911 he was created 1st Viscount Elibank.
Family
In 1868 he married Blanche Alice Scott, daughter of Dr. Edward John Scott. The couple had four sons and five daughters.
- Alexander William Charles Oliphant Murray (1870–1920), who was created Baron Murray of Elibank in 1912.
- Captain Honourable Edward Oliphant Murray (1871–1901), an officer in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders, who was killed on active service in South Africa during the Second Boer War, leaving an only daughter.
- Honourable Emily Blanche Murray (1872–1935), who married in 1893 Sir Robert Grenville Harvey, 2nd Baronet.
- Honourable Alice Florence Oliphant-Murray (1873–1966), who married first in 1902 Sir Stephen Leech (marriage annulled), and second in 1919 David Fell and moved to Australia.
- Honourable Nina Charlotte Murray (1875–1966), who married in 1896 Hylton Philipson.
- Gideon Oliphant-Murray (1877–1951), who succeeded his father as 2nd Viscount Elibank
- Arthur Cecil Murray (1879–1962), who succeeded his brother as 3rd Viscount Elibank
- Honourable Clara Isabel Murray (1880–1945), who married in 1902 Oswald Partington, 2nd Baron Doverdale
- Honourable Evelyn Izme Murray (1886–1976), who married first in 1906 Captain George Crosfield Norris Nicholson (1884–1916) by whom she was mother of Sir John Nicholson, 2nd Baronet; and second in 1917 John Edward Bernard Seely, 1st Baron Mottistone.
His eldest son, Alexander was created Baron Murray of Elibank in 1912, but predeceased his father with no children. The Viscountcy and other titles passed to his younger son.
