Mirta Maria Martin, Ph.D., (pronounced MEER-tah) (born June 18, 1960) is an American educator, previously serving as the 9th president of Fort Hays State University. Previously, Martin served as the Dean of Virginia State University's Reginald F. Lewis School of Business, a position she held from August 1, 2009 to June 30, 2014.[2]
Biography
Education
Originally from Cuba, Martin attended Duke University, where she graduated in 1982 with her bachelor of science in psychology.[3] Ten years later in 1992, Martin received her master's degree from the University of Richmond, followed by her doctorate from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1996.[4]
Early career
After graduating from Duke in 1982, Martin worked in banking for a decade. Martin eventually became the Senior Vice President of First Union National Bank of Virginia.[5]
Higher education career
Martin began teaching in 1992, and transitioned to a life and career full time in higher education in 1994.[6]
Averett University
After a little more than a decade in the banking industry, Martin became an associate professor of business at Averett University. Later, as a full time, tenured faculty member at Averett University in Richmond Virginia, Martin was named Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year and served as Interim Dean/Regional Director in 1995.[7]
University of Richmond
In 2001, Martin left Averett to become the Executive Director of the Management Institute and associate professor and dean of management development at the E. Claiborne Robins School of Business.[8] Martin developed and implemented the trademarked miniMBA™, spearheaded a successful financial turnaround of an executive education division and attracted award-winning faculty.[9]
John Tyler Community College
In 2005, Martin became John Tyler Community College's Special Assistant to the President and Executive Vice President and Executive Director of the Foundation for four years.[10] She spent time as a Special Assistant to the President, Executive Vice President and Executive Director for John Tyler Community College before becoming Special Assistant to the Chancellor of the Virginia Community College System.
Virginia State University
In 2009, Martin became the Dean and Professor for management at Virginia State University's Reginald F. Lewis School of Business.[11] Dr. Martin became the first female Hispanic Dean of the Commonwealth of Virginia in 2009 as the Dean and Professor of Management for the Reginald F. Lewis College of Business at Virginia State University. In 2012, the program was named the Best Business Program in the Nation among 108 Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Fort Hays State University
On May 2, 2014, the Kansas Board of Regents announced Martin as Fort Hays State University's ninth president. Martin became the first female president in the university's history, as well as the first Hispanic president in the Regents system.[12] Under Martin's leadership, FHSU experienced record-breaking enrollment and became third largest university in Kansas in FY17.[13]
On November 23, 2016, Martin announced she was stepping down effective immediately due to personal reasons. Currently, Dr. Martin serves as a Presidential Consultant to Kansas Board of Regents and Fort Hays State University.[14]
Other work
While in Virginia, Martin served on various board including the Virginia State Board for Community Colleges and Virginia Latino Advisory Board, after being appointed by former Virginia governors, Bob McDonnell and Tim Kaine.[15] Martin was also a recipient of the The Presidential Volunteer Service Award, given by the President of the United States.[16]
Martin also serves as the Senior Education Adviser to former Mexican President Vicente Fox and a Senior Scholar for the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU).[17]
Martin is a sought-after professional and lends her expertise to a variety of boards, including but not limited to serving as a trustee and past president for the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network (VALHEN), director for Racing Toward Diversity Magazine Advisory Board, AACSB BizEd Advisory Council, and the International Association of Universities (IAU), a UNESCO-based worldwide association of higher education institutions that brings together some 120 countries for reflection and action on common concerns.[18]
