Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry is the central body of public administration, subordinated to the Government. It has the mission to ensure the realization of the constitutional prerogatives of the Government in the development and promotion of state policy of sustainable development of agro-industrial sector of the country, by increasing competitiveness and productivity in the sector and ensuring the safety and food sufficiency in the country in order to create the premises for permanent increase in welfare. The current minister is Eduard Grama (2016–present) Functions: Develop and promote policies in developing markets food products, including organic production, enhancing food safety, including analyzes of policy impact. Ensuring food security of the country in terms of quality, quantity and availability of food. Strategic planning, analysis, monitoring and evaluation of policies designed to ensure their compliance with national strategies and programs and adjusting existing priorities and needs of European integration. The regulation, under the law on the organization and functioning of the market of food products and food safety. Ensure implementation of policies in the fields of agri-food market, organic production, food security, national and local cooperation in this regard with representatives of the specialized central and local government, civil society and media. Managing international programs for technical and financial assistance to support reform of market sectors of agricultural products, food safety. Technical drafting and promoting a policy aimed at ensuring rational use of energy resources, including through the expansion of renewable energy; policy development and promotion of rational use of the existing fleet of machines and tractors, to implement modern technologies in agriculture and increase agricultural production efficiency.

Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy 2014-2020

The creation of a modern Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy for the Republic of Moldova for 2014-2020 is recognition by the Government of the Republic of Moldova of the importance of the agri-food sector of rural development and is a precondition for their long-term development. It should also act as a framework for policy makers to identify the major problems and to help find the optimal answers. The strategy will be used as a tool to plan and programme all necessary measure and to secure financial support from the Government of Moldova, international development partners, IFI’s and donors. Elaborated Moldova’s Agriculture and Rural Development Strategy for 2014-2020 aims at reaching a vision based on coherence among agriculture, environment and rural development, representing economic, environmental and social issues. The vision is as follows: „ A competitive restructured and modernized agri-food sector. Improved living and working conditions in rural areas. Agri-food activities existing in harmony with the natural environment maintaining the biodiversity, cultural and traditional values for future generations”.

The specific objective of the strategy is follows: ”To raise the competitiveness of the agri-food sector through comprehensive restructuring and modernization and to improve the conditions for living and working in rural areas whilst achieving synergies between agry-food activities and the natural environment”.
