The football rivalry between Mindelense and Derby is considered the hugest rivalry in the island of São Vicente and one of the largest in Cape Verde. It is the largest rivalries in the nation and the region and is also the longest rivalry. It is one of three known as the Mindelo Derby (Derby do Mindelo) or the São Vicente derby (Derby de São Vicente).[1]
History
Since its creation of the regional championships in 1938, there had been around 110 matches that featured Mindelense and Derby, there were also over 130 matches with the cup competitions.
In 2008, the rivalry was featured in the São Vicente Super Cup, the match was never played as Derby forfeited and Mindelense was awarded 3-0 and won their second title.
At the 2015 Cape Verdean Football Championships, it was the only time that the rivalry was taken to the national level. At the 2015 finals, the first match ended in a goal draw on July 4 and as another match on July 11 was a draw, Mindelense won 3-4 in penalty kicks and claimed their 10th and also their third consecutive national title.
Cultural rivalry
The rivalry are similar to one of the rivalries in other parts of Cape Verde, for example, the Sporting-Travadores and Sporting-Boa Vista, both clubs are an affiliate of a Portuguese club. Neither Mindelense nor Derby are affiliates of a Portuguese club.
Football rivalry
The rivalry is the longest in Cape Verde.
Mindelense the most successful football (sooccer) club in Cape Verde,[2] having won about 83 official titles (12 national and 71 regional) compared to Derby' 21 official titles (3 national and 18 regional). On the other hand, Mindelense boast of their better goal scoring in African competitions (no Capeverdean team has ever won an African title) where they scored two goals, Mindelense first appeared in the 1993 African Cup of Champion's Clubs. While Derby appeared in the 2001 CAF Champions League and never scored a goal there. Both club's competed only in the participation in the Preliminary Round.
The 2017 São Vicente Cup final had this rivalry featured as both clubs competed, Derby won the match and the recent cup.
