Miguel Antonio de Merlos (1669-c.1744) was a Spanish nobleman,[1] he established himself in the Indies during the Viceroyalty of Peru, serving as Alférez, Capitán of Militias and Sargento Mayor of the Compañía of Guardias Españolas of Buenos Aires.[2] He had also served as Governor of the province of Porco in 1709.[3]

Biography

Miguel Antonio was baptized on January 20, 1669 in the Parish of Santa Eulalia (Murcia, Spain),[4] being his parents Diego de Merlos y Calvo and Estefanía Jiménez de los Ríos, belonging to noble families of Murcia.[5] In 1691, he had arrived at the port of Buenos Aires as a passenger of Capt. Francisco de Retama.[6]

In 1696, Merlos was married in the Buenos Aires Cathedral to Rosa Martinez de Figueroa,[7] born in 1669 in Chile, daughter of Juan Martínez Guerrero (Chile) and Josefa de Figueroa y Cabrera (born in Alcaraz).[8] Merlos and his wife were the parents of Miguel Antonio de Merlos y Martínez, caballero of the Real Orden de Santiago,[9] who served as alcalde of 2nd vote (vice-mayor) of Buenos Aires in 1735.[10]

In 1716 Merlos was appointed Royal Notary of Compañía Real del Asiento de Inglaterra, (South Sea Company), dedicated to slave trafficking.[11] He also held military posts as Alférez, Captain of militia, then promoted to Sergeant major.[12] And was Mayordomo of Buenos Aires Cabildo in 1705 and 1740.[13]

On September 15, 1708, the Sargento Mayor Don Miguel Antonio de Merlos was appointed Administrator of Porco (Potosí, Bolivia).[14]
