The Merdeka station is a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) underground station in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is one of the stations on Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit (KVMRT) Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line and serves as an interchange station to Plaza Rakyat LRT station for LRT Ampang and Sri Petaling Lines.

History

Merdeka MRT station was built on the location of the former Merdeka Park together with KL118. It opened on 17 July 2017, as part of Phase 2 of the SBK MRT line. The 118 storey KL118 Tower (that will be the tallest building in Malaysia) is currently under construction nearby this station. The station is also located next to Stadium Merdeka at Jalan Hang Jebat.[1]

The underground station is nearby, and lends its name from, the historical Stadium Merdeka, where Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia's first Prime Minister, declared the independence of the Federation of Malaya from the British Empire on 31 August 1957. As a result, the theme of Malayan independence was ultimately chosen as the interior design theme for this station.

The wall of the station concourse is lined with the text of the Rukunegara, the Malaysian national pledge. The ceiling above the escalator leading down from the station concourse to the platform level is decorated with a motif, which is essentially an exploded view of the 14-pointed star on the flag of Malaysia.[2][3] Each pillar on the station concourse is also decorated with the flags and emblems of each state of Malaysia.

Connection to Ampang and Sri Petaling Lines

Initially meant to be only a connecting station, the Merdeka MRT station now serves as an interchange station, with  SP8  AG8  Plaza Rakyat on the Ampang and Sri Petaling Lines via a paid-to-paid walkway link connecting between both stations. The linkway is located on the Plaza Rakyat station's concourse. Passengers are hence not required to purchase separate tickets while interchanging between both lines.

Alternately, Merdeka MRT station is somewhat within walking distance to  SP9  AG9  MR4  Hang Tuah LRT and monorail station.

Bus Services

The MRT feeder buses do not operate in this station. However, it is close to Pudu Sentral, a city bus station in Kuala Lumpur.
