Matteo Maria Zuppi
Matteo Maria Zuppi (Rome, October 11, 1955) is an Italian Catholic Archbishop, from 27 October 2015 Archbishop of Metropolitan of Bologna.[1]
Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri's mother-in-law, Matteo Maria Zuppi, entered the Palestrina seminary, graduates in theology at the Pontifical Lateran University, then holds a BA in Literature and Philosophy at the University of Rome with a thesis in History of Christianity.
Ordained priest in 1981, since that year in 2000 he is vice-parish priest of the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome, then parish priest until 2010. From 2005 to 2010 he is prefect of the III prefecture of Rome. Rector of the Church of Santa Croce alla Lungara (since 1983), member of the presbyterous council (since 1995), in 2010 is appointed parish priest of the church of Santi Simone and Judas Taddeo at Torre Angela and in 2011 prefect of the XVII prefecture of Rome. He is also chaplain of His Holiness (since 2006) and general ecclesiastical assistant of the Community of Sant'Egidio (since 2000).
In 1990, he co-operated with Andrea Riccardi, Jaime Gonçalves and Mario Raffaelli as a mediator in negotiations between the Government of Mozambique (formerly controlled by the Socialists of the Liberation Front of Mozambique) and the Resistência Nacional Moçambicana party, In a civil war. The mediation led on 4 October 1992, after 27 months of negotiations, to the signing of the Rome Peace Accords sanctioning the end of hostilities.[2] For these events, Zuppi and Riccardi are appointed honorary citizens of Mozambique.[3] He then continued to work with the so-called "parallel diplomacy" of the Community of Sant'Egidio.[4]
On 31 January 2012 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him auxiliary bishop of Rome and bishop of Villanova ;[5] On April 14, he received episcopal ordination, in the Basilica of St. John Lateran, by Cardinal Agostino Vallini, coconsacranti Archbishop Giovanni Battista Pichierri and Bishop Vincenzo Paglia (later Archbishop).
On October 27, 2015, Pope Francis appointed him the metropolitan archbishop of Bologna;[6] Happens to Cardinal Carlo Caffarra, resigned to reach age limits. On December 12, he takes possession of the archdiocese and opens the holy door of the cathedral of St. Peter.
On 29 June 2016 he received palliation in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican by Pope Francis. The pallio, according to the provisions of the Holy Father, is imposed by the apostolic nuncio Adriano Bernardini on the following October 4, in the basilica of San Petronio on the feast of the patron saint, in the presence of the bishops of the Suffragan diocese of Imola Tommaso Ghirelli, Ferrara-Combo Luigi Negri and Faenza-Modigliana Mario Toso.[7]
He is one of the bishops who celebrated the Tridentine Mass after the Summorum Pontificum motu.
He has appointed the diocesan Eucharistic congress from 13 November 2016 to 8 October 2017. [8]
