Biography

Matt Windschitl currently serves as the State Representative for Iowa House District 17. First elected in 2006 at the age of 22, Matt became the youngest legislator serving in the Iowa General Assembly at that time. Matt continues to serve as a State Representative and is currently in his fourth term. In 2009, his Republican colleagues in the Iowa House elected Matt as a House Republican Assistant Minority Leader and he was reelected as an Assistant Majority Leader in November 2010 as well as in November 2012.

Windschitl was born in Marshalltown, Iowa. He went on to receive his formal education at home before attending Colorado School of Trades for gunsmithing. Matt and Ivy Windschitl were married in July 2003 and they have two daughters Anna and Addy. He currently works as a switchman for Union Pacific Railroad and helps out in the family owned gun store in Missouri Valley.

In June 2001, he joined the United States Marine Corps at the age of 17. He served 6 years in the United States Marine Corps Reserves as a mechanic with the Engineer Maintenance Company, 4th Marine Logistics Group, 4th Maintenance Battalion. Matt served a tour of duty in Iraq in 2005, and was Honorably Discharged from the Marine Corps Reserves as a Sergeant in June 2009.

Political stances

Voting accessibility

During the 2017 legislative session, Windschitl voted[1] to shorten both the amount of time one may cast an absentee ballot and the number of days one can vote at satellite polling sites,[2] and he voted to require all voters to present a state-issued ID.[3] Though he voted for the measure, the bill was opposed by the Iowa State Association of Counties, an advocacy group for Iowa's disabled, and Iowa's Department on Aging opposed the bill.[4]
