Matthew "Matt" Oswalt (born September 25, 1970) is an American writer, actor, and comedian. He is the younger brother of comedian Patton Oswalt.

Early life and education

Oswalt was born in Portsmouth, Virginia on September 25, 1970, the son of Carla Oswalt (née Runfola), and Larry J. Oswalt, who was a United States Marine Corps officer.[1] Oswalt did not attend school.

Career

Oswalt's first television credit was as a writer for the children's program All That, which he wrote for four years.[2]

Additionally, he is the creator of the surrealist comedy web-series Puddin' Strip,[3][4] which featured regular appearances by brother Patton Oswalt, comedian and actor Robin Williams,[5] musician Weird Al Yankovic,[6] actor David Koechner,[7] comedian Paul Provenza,[8] actor Colin Hanks,[9] entertainer Dana Gould,[10] writer Jake Fogelnest, public figure Steven Weber,[11] and best friend Eddie Pepitone.[6] The show was cancelled sometime in 2013 for unknown reasons.

Oswalt is a prolific user of Twitter.[12] At the 2016 Grammy Awards he live-tweeted during the program[13][14][15][15] including a sardonic eye roll directed at Jill Soloway in response to their calls to "topple the patriarchy".[14][15]

He is a critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, and convinced actor Mark Hamill via Twitter to recite actual tweets written by Trump in the sinister voice of the Joker character from the Batman franchise.[16][17][18]

In 2013 Oswalt launched a talk show, The Pre-Dawn Show,[19][20] which featured appearances by Aimee Mann, Alyssa Milano, Pearl Aday, and Steven Weber, with Steve Agee serving as announcer. The show was unpopular and was discontinued after two episodes, after receiving only around 10,000 views per episode.

Other work

Oswalt has developed content for Jash, at one point working with Angela Kinsey of The Office,[21] as well as Milana Vayntrub, Bobcat Goldthwait, and Eddie Pepitone.[22]

He has also made multiple appearances on @midnight as well as the Opie with Jim Norton show, where he once spoke about comedian Whoopi Goldberg, citing her as his primary comedic influence.[23]

In 2014, his brother Patton Oswalt said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, that he had once received a wooden plaque featuring carvings of all of his pre-fame occupations as an unwelcome and envious gift from his younger brother.[24]
