Mateo Gil (15?-15?) was a Spanish conquistador, Alcalde and Regidor of Santa Fe, Argentina during the Viceroyalty of Peru.[1]

Biography

Born in Jaraicejo, Gil had arrived at Río de la Plata in the expedition of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca.[2] In 1573, Gil participated in the delegation led by Juan de Garay in Santa Fe, being part of the founding of the city.[3]

Mateo Gil also participated in the wars against the Indians charruas, he is remembered for his extreme cruelty.[4]
