Mary Magdalene is an upcoming American-British-Australian biblical drama film about Mary Magdalene written by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett, directed by Garth Davis. It stars Rooney Mara, Joaquin Phoenix, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Tahar Rahim.

It is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 24, 2017, by The Weinstein Company, before opening in the United Kingdom on March 23, 2018, by Universal Pictures.

Cast

Production

In February 2016, Rooney Mara joined the cast of the film portraying the role of Mary Magdalene, with Garth Davis directing the film, Universal Pictures, Film4 Productions and See-Saw Films will co-produce the film, with Iain Canning and Emile Sherman serving as producers.[1] In April 2016, Joaquin Phoenix was in talks to portray the role of Jesus Christ.[2] In July 2016, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Tahar Rahim joined the cast of the film.[3][4] In September 2016, Hadas Yaron joined the cast of the film.[5]

Filming

Principal photography began on October 3, 2016.[6] During production on the film, Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix were spotted on set filming.[7] Principal photography concluded on December 2, 2016.[8]

Release

In February 2016, The Weinstein Company acquired U.S distribution rights to the film.[9] Universal Pictures will distribute the film worldwide except for New Zealand and Australia where Transmission Films will distribute.[10] It is scheduled to be released in the United States on November 24, 2017.[11] It is scheduled to be released in the United Kingdom on March 23, 2018.[12]
