Mary Garrard

Mary Garrard is an American art historian. An emerita professor at American University, she is considered "one of the founders of feminist art theory"[1] and particularly known for her work on the Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.[2]

Biography

Garrard received her Bachelor of Arts from H. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College in 1958, her Master of Arts from Harvard University in 1960 and her Doctor of Philosophy from Johns Hopkins University.

With Norma Broude, she co-authored and edited a number of books on art history, and curated an arts exhibition, Claiming Space: Some American Feminist Originators in 2007 at the Katzen Arts Center.[3]

From 1974 to 1976, Garrard served as the national president of the Women’s Caucus for Art.[4]
