Marshal Dutton (born March 15, 1978) is an American-born singer, songwriter and guitarist. Dutton is best known for currently being the lead singer of the band Hinder. He has also seen success as the part-time lead vocalist and full-time lead guitarist in his former band Faktion. He also provides lead guitar and backing vocals in the country duo group Drankmore. In the late 1990s before Faktion, he was in a band called Carb in Denton, Texas.
Time with Faktion 2002–2010
In 2002, after attending the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, Dutton met Josh Franklin, Jeremy Coan and Jeremy Moore; together the four-piece band formed Faktion. Originally Dutton was the lead singer until the band later recruited a fifth member, Ryan Gibbs to come in and be lead singer; Marshal then took over as lead guitarist for the band. Dutton recorded and released his first EP with the band titled "Make a Dent" in 2004, the EP attracted the attention of Roadrunner Records and the band was signed to their label in October 2004.[1]
The band immediately started working on their self-titled debut album. The album was produced by Brett Hestla who was a member of Creed and Dark New Day, he also had been producing material for the at-time national act Tantric. legendary mixer Chris Lord-Alge mixed the album as well.[1] The album was recorded in Gridlock Studios in Orlando, Florida. Shortly after the album's recording, the band embarked on the "Girls Gone Wild" tour supporting Hinder and Rev Theory. The band also embarked on other tours such as opening for 10 Years and Seether.
Their debut album "Faktion" was released March 21, 2006. The album peaked on number 12 on the US Billboard albums charts.
In a mere eight months after the release of their debut album, the band was dropped from the Roadrunner Records roster, however on March 20, 2007 the band released a five song EP titled "The B-Sides".[2]
On May 3, 2007, it was announced the band's lead singer Ryan Gibbs had departed the band to pursue other interests. Although Dutton was originally the lead singer for Faktion, the band decided to recruit Aaron Pose to be the new lead vocalist instead.
Through the next few years Dutton released a couple more projects with Faktion, the EP titled "Ignite What's Inside" released on February 26, 2008,[3] and another EP titled "Crash Ashore" was released on September 27, 2008.[4]
The band released a new single titled "Take Your Shot" for free online in the Fall of 2009,[5] this was the band's last release before disbanding in October 2010.
Recent events and becoming the lead singer of Hinder
In 2009 Dutton began helping write and produce songs for Hinder's 2010 studio album All American Nightmare, shortly thereafter he founded "Back-Lounge Productions alongside Hinder's drummer Cody Hanson.[6] Their cliental includes acts like "9 Left Dead" and "Right On Red".[7]
Dutton also founded a country group with Jarrod Denton on lead vocals, although Denton and Dutton are listed as the only two members in the group Cody Hanson from Hinder has been supplying drum work for the group.
Drankmore released their first single titled "Beer Pressure" on March 2, 2012.[8]
The group released their second single titled "You Got To Me" on October 26, 2012,[9] they released a music video for the single and it did fair some pretty well radio success.
Dutton once again in 2012 helped write and co-produce Hinder's Welcome to the Freakshow album.
On January 20, 2015, it was announced that Dutton was the new lead singer for Hinder via the band's social media sites. This came after Hinder announced in November 2013 that their former lead vocalist Austin Winkler left the band to pursue a solo career. The decision came after Hinder experimented with Nashville-based singer Nolan Neal in the summer of 2014 throughout the rest of the year, band stated Neal's voice was a little too country for their rock image and that Dutton was the perfect fit because he had been writing and producing for the band since 2009. Cody Hanson of Hinder stated that Dutton was right under their nose the entire time it just took them a little while to see he was the perfect fit.[10]
Hinder had released a new single titled "Hit The Ground" on November 24, 2014 with Nolan Neal on vocals, however once the announcement came that Dutton was officially the band's new vocalist a version with him on vocals was released as well. The band had already also announced on December 9, 2014 that their new album would be titled When The Smoke Clears.
On March 17, 2015, Hinder released the second single with Dutton on lead vocals titled "Rather Hate Than Hurt". They also announced the same day that their new album would be released May 12, 2015.
Dutton has been touring with the band in support of the new album since March 2015.
Dutton released When The Smoke Clears with Hinder as planned on May 12, 2015.[11] The album debuted at number four on the iTunes rock charts.
