Marlatt Hall was the only all-male residence hall at Kansas State University, United States. Starting with the 2009-2010 academic year, Marlatt became a coed residence hall which includes the honors program cluster floor (2nd floor), an Architecture cluster floor, and an Engineering cluster floor.[1] Marlatt has a capacity to house 612 men and women in a variety of suite and standard room options. It is located on the West side of Kansas State's Manhattan, Kansas campus in the Kramer Complex. The other buildings in that complex are the Kramer Dining Center and Goodnow Hall. Beginning 2015, construction of Wefald Hall and the renovation of the Kramer Complex was initiated. A distinguishing feature of this complex is that all buildings in this complex are made of brick, unlike the majority of buildings at K-State which are fronted with limestone.
Marlatt contains a high concentration of Engineering and Architecture majors due to its proximity to the Engineering Complex. Marlatt is well known for being the most efficient of the residence halls at Kansas State University. In the summer of 2007, the first floor lobby and main desk area were remodeled, along with new furniture for all the Marlatt lobbies. Also during the 2007 summer, new furniture was placed in the basement and on floors one through three in the residents rooms. During the summer of 2008, floors 4, 5, and 6 received new furniture in the rooms. During the summer of 2009, Marlatt received new windows on floors 3 through 6. Marlatt Hall has seen a lot of additional changes over the course of the 2009-2010 school year. These changes include: updating the weight room, basement lobby, laundry room, basement hallway, and TV room with new paint and carpet. The biggest change of the 2009-2010 school year was the complete remodel of the kitchen in the building. Marlatt Hall now proudly owns the newest and most up-to-date kitchen on K-State's campus. During the 2010-2011 school year, Marlatt Hall received brand new elevators as well as a main desk area remodel.
Marlatt Hall features a computer, television, and exercise rooms each in their respective areas of the hall. An interesting feature of Marlatt was that until the spring of 2010 Marlatt was one of only two Kansas State Residence Halls containing a dark room, the other being Moore Hall.[2]
History
Marlatt Hall is named after Washington Marlatt, an early Manhattan settler, minister and administrator at Bluemont Central College, later renamed Kansas State University.[3]
Since it was the last all male dormitory at Kansas State, students referred to it as the "Penis Palace." Marlatt did get several suites placed in its basement in 2003. There is a gameroom, television room, exercise room, weight room, dark rooms, study rooms and laundry room.
For many years Marlatt has been teamed up with West Hall for most campus events including homecoming events. This pairing won the overall homecoming award in 2003 and 2004 until it became apparent that West no longer wanted to be paired with Marlatt in 2004. Therefore, in 2005 it was decided to switch to Moore Hall, which Marlatt has a better, more "accepting," relationship with. In 2005 the overall homecoming award was won by the "Moore-Marlatt team." The pairings for Homecoming were again changed for 2006, and in 2007 were paired with Goodnow Hall, resulting in Marlatt Hall's fourth win in five years.[4]
The Hall has several traditions that are carried out to this day. Of these traditions, the most well known is the "Marlatt-West Casino Night." This event started in 1984 and has taken place in the Student Union annually for twenty-one years. In the 2005-2006 school year the hall president chose not to secure the room for the event, causing the casino night not to take place after what is known as the "first blackjack." During the 2006-2007 school year however, Casino Night went off without a hitch and was given much praise by all residents who attended. Casino Night was recognized in 2009 as the MACURH region Program of the Year. This was a great honor because the MACURH region includes 7 states and 1 Canadian Province. The 2010 version of Casino Night included an exciting venue change as Marlatt partnered with the Jardine Apartments to host the event in the brand new Jardine Tower. The event was classy and done to the level that all Marlatt alum can be proud of.
