Mark S. Ghiorso

Mark S. Ghiorso (born 1954) is an American geochemist who resides in Seattle, Washington. He is best known for creating MELTS.,[1] a software tool for thermodynamic modeling of phase equilibria in magmatic systems.

Career

In 1980, Ghiorso was hired by the University of Washington (UW) as assistant professor in the Department of Geological Sciences.[2] He was 26 years old. He was promoted to associate professor (a tenured position) three years later and to full professor in 1986. He served as department chair from 1994 to 1999.

In 2003, he was hired by the University of Chicago. Leaving the UW was a difficult decision, as Ghiorso is a great believer in public education. He cited serious concerns about the UW administration as a primary reason for departing.

In 2005 he decided to leave academia and dedicate himself to research fulltime. He returned to Seattle and, with his colleague Richard Sack, founded the small non-profit research company OFM Research,[3] where he is a senior research scientist. He also holds affiliate faculty appointments at the University of Washington[4] and Vanderbilt University.[5]

Ghiorso has also served as editor for various scientific journals:

Scientific contributions

Ghiorso's work has focused primarily on developing computational tools that facilitate thermodynamic modeling. He is perhaps best known for creating MELTS,[6] a software tool for thermodynamic modeling of phase equilibria in magmatic systems. He spent 12 years writing the code.[7] His colleague Richard Sack provided the experimental data. In 1995 they published their work in Contributions to Mineralogy and Petrology, where it became the journal's most cited paper, with more than 2,100 citations as of early 2017.[8] Over the years, MELTS has been updated and improved and released in various versions as new data become available.

The European Geosciences Union said the following of Ghiorso's work:[9]

Ghiorso’s approach to science has been characterised by the firm belief that each scientific advancement is a resource that must be made freely and fully available to other scientists. The computational codes that he has been regularly producing, testing, releasing and updating, among which the famous MELTS code in its various versions, allow scientists throughout the world to test their ideas and hypotheses and to develop new ones. Ghiorso’s comprehensive approach to multi-component phase relationships in silicate melts has also been an inspiration for young and experienced scientists, who found in his papers detailed descriptions of both the basic physics and the numerical approaches, as well as an enormous database of internally consistent thermodynamic quantities on which to base their own research developments.

Ghiorso is currently working on ENKI,[10] a collaborative, Web-based model-configuration and testing portal to aid in computational thermodynamics and fluid dynamics. He is the lead PI on the project[11] Ghiorso's MELTS and DEW work has been identified as a key focus in the Deep Carbon Observatory's thermodynamic modeling efforts.[12]

Software tools

Software tools that Ghiorso has created, either alone or with others, include the following:

Education

Ghiorso earned an AB, MS, and PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. He chose Berkeley for practical reasons: "I went to Berkeley because it was the local school, because tuition was essentially free, and because I was fascinated as a high school student with hot springs, volcanos, and, in particular, the work of Howell Williams and Arthur L. Day."[19]
