Margaret Moore is an American attorney and politician who has served as the District Attorney of Travis County since January 3, 2017. Moore is the second woman to serve as district attorney after her predecessor, Rosemary Lehmberg.

Prior to serving as district attorney, Moore served as the Travis County Attorney from 1981 to 1984, and Travis County Commissioner from the 3rd Precinct from 1997 to 1998, and again from 2001 to 2002.

Early life

Moore was born in Waco, Texas to Tom Moore, Jr, an attorney who served as district attorney for McLennan County, Texas. Moore earned a bachelor business administration degree in accounting from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 and a juris doctor from the University of Texas School of Law in 1972. She was licensed to practice law in Texas in 1973.[1]

Professional career

Moore has served for legal counsel to various Texas House of Representatives committees from 1974 to 1975, Travis County Juvenile Public Defender in 1976, Travis County Assistant District Attorney from 1977 to 1980, Travis County Attorney from 1981 to 1984 and Texas Assistant Attorney General from the Civil Medicaid Fraud Division from 2005 to 2014. Moore also served as Precinct 3 Travis County Commissioner twice, appointed by the county judge to serve unexpired terms from 1999 to 1998 and again from 2001 to 2002.[2]

2016 election

On December 7, 2015, Moore announced her candidacy for District Attorney, hoping to succeed retiring incumbent Rosemary Lehmberg. Moore enternece in the race for district attorney upset her fellow running mate and assistant district attorney Gary Gobb, who had raised about $85,000, according to the Austin-American Statesman.[3] Moore won the general election on November 8, 2016 and weeks later ousted over 20 employees at the district attorney's office in what she called a shakeup.[4]

Moore was sworn in as district attorney on January 3, 2017.[5][6]
