Manny Gutierrez (born 1991)[4], known professionally as Manny MUA, is a make-up artist, Youtuber, beauty blogger, and beauty influencer.[2] He is the first male brand ambassador for make-up brand Maybelline. MUA has a social media presence that includes over 3 million followers on Youtube and 3 million on Instagram.[3][1]
Career
Manny first became interested in make-up after watching his mother do her make-up during his childhood.[5] He later worked at Sephora and MAC.[1] He began his Youtube channel in 2014.[5] He regularly posts make-up tutorials, make-up first impressions, and beauty tips.[5] He has collaborated with Makeup Geek on an eye-shadow palette and Ofra Cosmetics on lip products.[6]
In 2017, Manny and fellow Youtuber Shayla Mitchell were announced as brand ambassadors for Maybelline, specifically Colossal Big Shot Mascara.[1][7] He is the first male brand ambassador for the brand.[1][2] He is the second male to be chosen as a spokesperson for a beauty brand after James Charles who had been previously announced as a spokesperson for CoverGirl in October 2016.[1] Later that year, Manny and friend Jeffree Star announced a collaboration for Star's make-up brand to debut in April.[8] After the announcement, Black Moon Cosmetics sued Manny and Star for copyright and trademark infringement alleging that they had copied their logo without permission.[9] The lawsuit was later resolved.[9] In April 2017, Manny was the only male to make People magazine's annual "Most Beautiful" list.[2]
Personal life
Manny grew up in a Mormon family and has two younger brothers.[4][5] Manny identifies as homosexual[5] and has described being sent to therapy as a teenager to "reverse the effects of being gay", though he was allowed to stop after six months as he became depressed during the ineffective treatment.[5][6]
Before decided on a career in beauty, Manny planned to attend medical school with aspirations of becoming a plastic surgeon.[1][6] Growing up, he played volleyball and attended the Junior Olympics.[4] He lives in San Diego, California.[2] He is good friends with fellow Youtubers Patrick Starrr, whom he met at a make-up convention,[5][6] and Jeffree Star.[8]
